I'm too elated and exhausted to pen a cohesive review, so this will be a stream-of-consciousness impression of today's brillaint show at Makuhari Messe in Chiba - Summer Sonic 2002. Forgive and typos and/or errors...

Other attendees please confirm -- but I believe the selection of songs was the same as Osaka, but in a slightly different order(?)



Morrissey and the boys came onstage at 7:00pm after an admittedly impressive set from sartorial, seductive, sexy, Siouxie Sioux. I yelled for "Interlude" but got no response from Black-Eyed Susan.

Morrissey dressed in the white frilly shirt we've seen, black cardigan, grey cargo/dress pants (you have to see them). Plus, the quiff has returned. Alan in cuffed vintage jeans and black button-down shirt with white dot pattern. Boz in pink shirt with the sleeves rolled up, specs, avec beard. Gary in black shirt and jeans. Dean in short-sleeved white. The mob went nuts, shoving, elbowing, falling, screaming. There were people with gladioli and other flowers, tour shirts from various eras and cameras carefully concealed. The foreign (ie. non-Japanese) contingent was fairly strong I must say.

Moz' voice was unbelievably clear and pitch-perfect. I've only seen him live 3 times, and of course the many live videos/CDs, but I must say he sang beautifully. The band performed without a hitch, although the guitars got lost in the mix I'd say. Gary's basslines reverbed with clarity , and Dean's drumming has fully integrated as if he were part of the band for a long time, although I think Spensah hit the skins a bit harder. Ok, I'm switching to point-form mode...

-Hearing Suedehead live was great - but again, the mix didn't do the guitars justice.

-I shout "Bozman!" after an excellent Jack the Ripper -- he does a little bow.

-Switched first two verses of Alsatian Cousin by accident(?). Changed to "With your legs open wide." There were also three or four dog-barking samples during the bridge. No joke.

- New songs: all solid, although nothing in the hooks or vocal melodies really caught me off guard, the songs blended very well into the set and the audience seemed to like them. I concur with Osakaglen; Moz' vocal melody for I Like You is wonderful. Lyrically and musically, Mexico was the best. The World is Full of Crashing Bores was the best performed of the new songs -- Moz was very into it. There's a lot of vitriol in it -- it's cut from the same cloth as Paint a Vulgar Picture, I'd say.

- Gary (positioned rear stage-left, next to Dean) comes to the very front and does a full-on rock star pose during the final bridge in November before his bassline kicks in...very cool. No animal-like screeches from Alain, only Moz sitting and slightly moaning.

-Moz sitting on the stage toward the end of Meat is Murder, back to audience, bathed in red light. He slowly lays down and "dies". Very powerful.

-I Love Speedway, Mark II, with it's very slowly sung opening verse. This accentuates the chainsaw rip.

People cheer vigourously for an encore and Moz obliges after a costume change into a very fetching black suit sans shirt. He dedicates the last song to Elvis, and the boys start into There is a Light.... Now, don't forget, there are a lot of people who love Morrissey and The Smiths, but don't frequent websites like this/MT/AO etc. The shock and joy on people's face as Morrissey began to sing this classic, was classic. The crowd undulated with joy -- singing all the lyrics and swaying in time, almost collapsing. Girls broke down in tears, flowers were thrown...It's the best concert moment I've ever had.

When it was over, Moz jogged offstage and the boys all did a group bow, and the fans responded with generous applause. We tried for a second encore...but it was over.

Sweat-soaked, bruised, hoarse, and emotionally spent, I rode the train home. Thank you Morrissey!

      I wish the last night was like that.......

      Unfortunately, I didn't see none of these from where I was. I was close to the front..but it wasn't a strong crowd last night, so I could easily have an ample space for myself which allowed me to have an undisturbed view of the stage and the crowd alike..
      Am I right to think that you also hoped the gig had been like that....... The crowd was a bummer for you ? .....I don't blame you if that was how you felt 'cause we were... Or maybe you chose a best position in the house while I was surrounded by very quiet people at the opposite side..... (Are you the one from Ireland, by the way ?)
       
      Yes, a big cheer welcomed Morrissey and the band onto the stage. and an even bigger cheer upon hearing the intro of "I Want The One I Can't Have"and it was then a couple of gladioli were thrown in ..... That moment was the climax of the night. The elation, then, slowly wilted.. or it looked so on the outside at least.....
      We were not very responsive,... To Morrissey's remarks, "Are you still there?", " Tokyo, you are quiet", rather weak and scattered cheers were the best we could do...
      The stage was not that far nor high for us to invade, either........ Morrissey even said"Don't hold back" to the crowd, to which an embarassed silence ensued of us not knowing how to repond to that....... very Japanese......... The increased security staff during the last song expecting stage invasion added up to nothing...........
      There's a light that never goes out....I wonder how many people in the crowd actually sang the verse.... Morrissey invited us to sing it by humming threre himself... but.........

      Having said all these. Morrissey was fabulous. his sleek and mellow voice was ever so beautiful. and the band was tight!!.
      It's us, the crowd, who could have done better.......but we are Japanese and many members of the crowd are no longer young (me, a front runner of being the oldest in the crowd) enough to do "justice" to his superlative performance ...... or the large part of the crowd being too young .....

      Other than the description of the crowd.......
      your review is super.... it brings me back to that moment!!

      Sorry for being so meek...... but it does not eclipse the gig....... His perforance can stand alone.

          This is an epic tour. The setlists so far are amazing. I wish I could've went to Japan, had a little calamari and Sapporo, and seen Moz. Guess i'll have to wait for the So-Cal tourstops. Props to you Moz.

                I knew in my exhaustion I forgot at least one great moment -- the typhoon quote! Just after that he said something like "We have some dirty(?) songs from England...England.....hmm...England."

                I now remember after he introduced the band, he said "My name is Morrissey", in an Andy Kaufman voice, and did a little bow.

                The church bell intro is perfect for a Morrissey show. And Dean's gong added a new element of percussion. What's next, taiko drums?

                By the way, in case anybody was wondering -- it was impossible to get up on the stage. The "moat" was about 12-15 feet wide avec security, as well as a highly mobile TV camera on a crane rig, capturing the whole show. When Moz "died" during Meat is Murder, the camera shot him from above and slowly floated upwards. I want that tape.
