Despite Radio One's week-long campaign Morrissey is now NOT appearing on Wednesday's John Peel radio programme. Due to what Attack Records describe as a 'misunderstanding,' Morrissey has now pulled out of the live session scheduled for Wednesday evening.

The 'misunderstanding' arose between Morrissey and his record company; Morrissey "wasn't listening" when Attack Records explained that the session would be performed in front of a studio audience of twelve people being under the impression that he would perform privately in a link to John Peel's show.

The session has now been pre-recorded and will be aired on Zane Lowe's show. None of the tracks will appear on John Peel's programme. The event has produced a great deal of embarrassment for Radio One who are keen to offer the disappointed competition winners alternative prizes. Attack Records have yet to provide an official explanation of events.

John Peel said a week and a half ago that Morrissey would do three live songs on the Zane Lowe show and two more on his show.
So, I can't see what the problem is.
Anyway 12 people is not an audience.

The BBC Zane Lowe show page still says:
    "Wednesday
Morrissey's new album 'You Are The Quarry' is released this week. He plays live from Maida Vale on Zane's show on Wednesday. John Peel will also have more from the bequiffed one after Zane so don't switch that dial!"

  • In answer to the first post, John Peel was an influential early supporter of The Smiths; Many of the tracks on "Hatful of Hollow" are actually from his show!

But this all seems so strange to me. Why would Morrissey pull out of an engagement just because of an "audience" of 12 fans? Makes me wonder if this reason is false, or if there's more going on that we don't know about.

  • Sanctuary a probably trying to hold Mozza to his contract i.e. that they take a fee from any LIVE performance with an audience.

Surely any airplay on the beeb will just help sell the album and single and therefore have the knock on effect of reimbursing sanctuary (or is is Wanctuary).

Looks like the dissagreement is sorted now though so we can all look forward to tommorrow's Radio show.

    Cheers

If Morrissey wasn't listening, how is that a misunderstanding? So, if I tell my chick...that i'm gonna buy her "You Are The Quarry", and then say i'm not because I wasn't listening when she asked for it...can I call that a misunderstanding too?
Let me tell you something, this proves that Moz is the greatest bullshitter on the face of the planet. AND that's not an insult! I admire that! To get by in this world, you have to be.
This is too classic! "Moz wasn't listening? Oh okay. We're sorry. Our bad, please forgive us. We mistook the biting of your lower lip and looking around the room casually, as a sign that you were listening carefully. We'll do better next time".
One more thing, I just have to say, for all you female fans that have loved this man for all these years, thinking that he is unlike any other man you've ever met...think again! He is just like the rest of us.
Thank you Morrissey! You've just made me not look so bad!

    ...and how?
  • I'm surprised that this is happening relatively late in the YATQ campaign! These "misunderstandings" are part and parcel of Moz's career when it comes to "obligations"...cancelled appearances/videos/performances are par for the course, and, while infuriating, are part of the picture and always have been...surely Sanctuary bargained for it. Take it from someone who slept outside in NYC for tickets to the Vauxhall shows at Carnegie Hall that never materialized...because of a "misunderstanding"!

  • Here we go.... I hope he doesn't fall back into old patterns of behaving weird and letting people down. So far he seems to cooperate quite well with Sanctuary's apparent marketing plan.

  • because he's contractually obliged to have Julia in the audience and he couldn't get her past the BBC security.

She's probably holding the negatives of Spencer and Mozzer rolling around naked in bed.

  • Once again, Morrissey drags through the shit the faces of people who have gone out of their way to help him. If he 'wasn't listening', maybe he should have. He could do with learning some manners and consideration for others.

It disturbs me how quick some folk are to stab Morrissey in the back at the drop of a hat around here.

  • Isn't it kind of an strange situation to perform to an audience of just 12 anyhow? Moz needs either the full energy of a proper audience, or none at all. Either way, this is may be a shrewd move to get more airplay. He's now on in an earlier slot and then as well as on Peel.
