The two songs on the Peel show were Don't Make Fun of Daddy's voice, and No One Can Hold a Candle To You. Peel had no idea who Raymonde were, unsurprisingly. They were played the one running into the other - if you're listening online it's about 10 minutes into the show.

No One Can Hold A Candle To You is absolutely amazing! It should be a single. It's up there with his best songs!

Will someone upload MP3s of these songs. I MUST have a copy of "Daddys Voice" its a shame this song didnt make it on the album.

Merritt (no slouch as a lyricist himself) praises Moz but slams the music. He's right: YATQ is lyrical brilliance set to musical wallpaper. From the NY Times:

MORRISSEY His new album, "You Are the Quarry" (Sanctuary), demonstrates more than ever that the best lyricist in rock, Morrissey, still surrounds himself with dull musicians incapable of properly filling out his introspective kitchen-sink dramas. Plodding generic rock 'n' roll accompanies "Where taxi drivers never stop talking, under slate-gray Victorian sky: Here you'll find despair and I." At this level of lyric artistry, these warmed-over arena rock backdrops are a waste. One longs to lock him up for a year with, say, the pop orchestra the High Llamas, so lyrics like "I've been dreaming of a time when to be English is not to be baneful, to be standing by the flag not feeling shameful, racist or martial" can be matched by equally thoughtful arrangements.

Great comments from Moz too about IBEH being the only British single in the UK top 5 and still Radio 1 refuses to play it! Losers!

It was a fantastic trio of songs, and sounded close to the standard you'd expect on a record. He changed the lyric of IBEH back to "racist or racial" and the singing on Shoplifters were great - if anything, even better than on the Smiths record. His voice really has improved over the years.

"daddy's voice" has quite a controversial lyric that would have been torn apart and dissected back in 1984, but that's old news now.

The cover version was also very good.

I loved Morrissey's reply to the question, "what would it take to bring you back to the UK?"

"erm, a change of government, and all high court judges to be drowned."
