  • Morrissey is the only reason why I'll watch David Letterman because Mr. Letterman is boring. I'll wait till the end of the show because that is usually when the music performers do their acts.

  • waited outside with a bunch of other fans that couldnt get into the taping. he came out after nicholas cage and jason alexander had already left which was good because a decent portion of the crowd at the barrier dispersed. a few minutes before he came out his manager took all of our letters to give to him as well as a rose my friend had bought for him. he walked out and to the confusion and surprise of all the everyday people just huddled around to see what celebrities were there, every started shouting "Morrissey!" to which he paused, smiled, and gave a kind of startled look before ducking into the limo. after that we went and talked to the people who had been inside for the taping. then the band came out to sign autographs. i got my picture taken with boz. all in all it was fun and worthwhile and i cant wait to watch the show!

p.s. suzzane and julia c. nice to meet you and lets be in touch soon about the pictures!

  • Lovely, as always. I thought the band didn't quite sound its very best--the tempo felt rushed, or Moz and the boys weren't quite in the same key or something--but nevertheless Moz hit some tinglingly low notes and, of course, looked as dashing as ever. I quite like the priestly garb--Moz is about the only way I can see any sort of "god shit" (to quote task, above) being appealing to me. :)

Also, whatever comments Moz may have made in the past, he and Dave appeared very cordial--and Fr. Morrissey even smiled. I do wish Dave would interview his musical guests, but alas--at least he had him on.

Excellent performance, though! I'm sure it'll cause a happy little bump in his U.S. record sales this week.

  • I put in a request for tickets for this show on October 2nd. I never got called. However, people who were putting in requests this month were seeing them granted. How does that work exactly?

I placed the call this morning to attempt to get a stand-by ticket for myself. I got in at #40...took my chances, and headed straight out from Philadelphia since I had to be there no later then 4:30. I got up there in time, and when 4:30 rolled around, they lined us up according to number. But it didn't take long for the representative to announce that anyone with a number of 40 and above will definitely not be getting in. Two of my friends were numbers 31 and 32 and I waited with them to see if they were able to get in. It didn't take long for the same guy to deliver the same message (sorry girls). The only wound up letting in 9 people. What a dissapointment.

I waited out back afterwards and was able to get a picture with an autograph of Nicolas Cage and a glimpse of Jason Alexander. Finally Morrissey emerged but was quick to his getaway vehicle as usual. The band came out a few minutes later and Mary, one of the girls, snapped photos, one with Dino, Mike and I, and another of Boz and I. Not exactly what I came for but this was pretty neat. Thanks to everyone who stopped to talk to the fans, sign autographs and take pictures and such. It's a very kind gesture, and it made my day into a not complete wste of time and money. (Jason Alexander was immediatly going to Chicago so got left right away, Mozz was being Mozz, and Jesse and Gary no one really stopped so they kept walking, went up the street and dissapeared)

I just watched and taped the airing, I guess I didn't miss too much but this day will still go down as a big let down.

  • At the Barrier (Score:2, Interesting)

I planned to call at 11 a.m. to try to get placed on stand-by, but woke up completely disoriented at 2 p.m. Luckily, my friend had called and we were given #'s 31 and 32. We met at the theater around 3:30. A group of people were waiting by the side doors. We were told to wait by the corner. While we were at the corner, we missed Morrissey's entrance through the side doors. We make the 1st cut, just barely, 32 is the last number, and the line moves to the front of the theater. The Letterman helper says the time to run to the bathroom is now. When I get back my friend informs me have been unceremoniously cut from the line.

Plan B: In our discouragement we gravitate over to the barrier by the stage doors. Nic Cage arrives. In Morrissey mode, I expect him to sweep by, but no. He pauses in front of the people by the barrier and signs autographs, and lingers so much that I have time to approach the crowd, take out my camera, and start snapping away. He looks great: He has on a white wife-beater and tight leather jeans. He is smaller than I would have thought, both in height and weight. He appears extremely gentle and kind--slowly going though the motions--not rushing at all. I really haven't thought about him in about 10 years, though I did use to admire him and love some of his movies like Wild at Heart. (Also he's a huge Elvis fan which is great.) I am thinking to myself he looks great, so I just shout out, "You look great, Nicolas!" to which he responds "thank you." (I feel silly calling him by his first name!) My friend tells him she loves his pants. The crowd is very calm and so is he--very nice experience. The true paparazzi appears to be on the other barrier and are shouting out: "Over here, Nic!" Over here, that's right, thank you!" Everyone on our side is overcome by how nice and mellow he is and thanking him. I yell out, "Thank you Nic!" impressed by a celebrity that stops to interact with his fans, not used to it (living in the Moz world too long).

Autograph hounds are there that simply run the rounds of the studios and get everyone's autograph and pictures, so the people there are not necessarily fanatic about each single star, though methodical in their push to gain as many celebrity autographs as possible. I get the feeling there is a small scene of these people--maybe they all know each other and have their own clicks and drama--maybe even their own internet message board! Though there was one person that had specific Nic Cage posters that he signed.

Then comes Jason Alexander. He is equally friendly and signs a lot of autographs. I snap some pictures and I think say "Thank you" again impressed by this accessibility.

The show goes pretty fast and before we know it Nicolas Cage is back again, lingering again. With all the flashes going off, I get into press mode and ask, in a press-conference type voice, "Did you talk to Morrissey, Nicholas?" He sort of laughs and says, "No, I didn't, sorry." with an Elvis-like drawl. He pauses near me and takes photos with my friends and I also snap another photo of him with someone standing near me. I didn't ask to be in a photo with him because I was really there for Morrissey, but looking back, maybe I should have, oh well.

Next comes out Jason Alexander. He shrugs his shoulders apologetically and says, "Sorry, I have to rush to catch a plane," something like that, and walks slowly to his car. He does seem genuinely apologetic, but then again he is an actor. Again, I am impressed by how cool these two people were.

Next the moment we were all waiting for. A black Mercedes pulls up and its door opens at a perfect angle for me to take a shot. People are getting nervous every time the door opens. The driver waits outside the car. I take his picture--I'm not sure he enjoyed that. My friend and I had gotten incredibly silly and giddy by this point. Apologies if you were around us. We are using quite well-adjusted people. Morrissey's manager comes out, talks to some people i

  • Great show, wish I could have been there myself. One thing the cameras picked up on: is it just my imagination or does Jesse miss alot of notes? I'm trying not to get on the guy because I know that musicians will tend to make mistakes as they are only human. Sometimes the mistakes make the live performance a little more unique. But not only did I hear it, the camera zoomed in on his guitar as it happened. Again, not trying to hate on Jesse, as a matter of fact, he's doing remarkably well for joining the band in the middle of the tour. I would ask one thing: Bro, what's with the porn star mustache? Any longer and the clones are going to start sending me Rollie Fingers emails. I guess it's kind of hard noticing these things at the shows from nose-bleed seats but dude reminded me of a cross between Prince and Sammie Davis Jr. Seeing as to how the tour is wrapping up in December, no hope in hearing Alain again. Hope all else is well in his life.

The NY came out strong tonight. We had our Kilby shows and now you have your Letterman. Would have been nice to see him on Conan with Eddie Izzard. Some of you are reporting that he left in a black mercedes. You didn't happen to see a mustang trailing his rig did you? We all remember that incident in Philly. Be safe Moz.

  • Whilst the priest outfit / nun habits was a very funny idea for a Halloween show, it is the latest joke that Morrissey has run into the ground. It truly feels like he is running out of ideas with which to provoke audiences.

The Letterman gig seemed "tacked on," serving no real promotional purpose by playing a song that's been flogged to death on American TV. Why not play I Like You or The World is Full of Crashing Bores? I think the post-tour exhaustion showed in both Morrissey's lackluster vocal performance and the overall presentation. And First of the Gang to Die is one song in particular begging for Alain's return: Jesse murders the solo.

I hate to say it, but the best part for me was Letterman's wise ass comment when he came over to shake Morrissey's hand!

    Cheers,

I think it is very rude of Morrissey to ignore his fans all the time. I met him in person and he was brutal. Also, what's with the priest costume? I know I'm not British and I would'nt understand but, that's wierd! It sucks that Morrissey has to sing a song that he sang over two years ago. It's a shame his career has come to this. The Smiths recorded a hundred good songs in the same time span when they were huge.

Now you people can start bashing me and drink your Kool Aid. Oh by the way, that's something you British would not get!

  • Dunno when I’m gonna get to see the show on this side of the world, but I’m grateful for the details gleaned around here. What was the reverend’s sermon for Letterman and the world?! Anything at all?
While we’re still on question-time, here are some more teenage exam attempts, especially for tenderliz, almodez, mozisgod, eric, pedro, eli and millions of others I overlooked the last time who brave the course.
This is a(nother) compilation of actual student GCSE answers...
      1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert and travelled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.
      2. The Bible is full of interesting caricatures. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. One of their children, Cain, asked, "Am I my brother's son?"
      3. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada.
      4. Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.
    5. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.
      6. Actually, Homer was not written by Homer but by another man of that name.
      7. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.
      8. In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled the biscuits, and threw the java.
      9. Eventually, the Romans conquered the Greeks. History calls people Romans because they never stayed in one place for very long.
      10. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: "Tee hee, Brutus."
      11. Nero was a cruel tyranny who would torture his subjects by playing the fiddle to them.
      12. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw. Finally Magna Carta provided that no man should be hanged twice for the same offence.
      13. In midevil times most people were alliterate. The greatest writer of the futile ages was Chaucer, who wrote many poems and verses and also wrote literature.
    14. Another story was William Tell, who shot an arrow through an apple while standing on his son's head.
      15. Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen." As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted "hurrah."
      16. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. And Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper.
    17. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couplet. Romeo's last wish was to be laid by Juliet.
      18. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.
      19. During the Renaissance America began. Christopher Columbus was a great navigator who discovered America while cursing about the Atlantic.
His ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Fe.

True friends stab you in the front.
  • One of Morrissey's greatest abilities is to present one of his most played songs in a new light - sometimes finding new ways to harmonize it. You may have noticed this already - it was a great performance - and the priest garb was so damn good. David Letterman gave him a very nice introduction - and was thouroughly cordial (as usual). Why are people so condescending about Letterman - he is a well-spoken genuine guy - who obviously opposes Bush (even if he is another wealthy giant) - he still seems very genuine.

  • he had no real way of knowing..." I was at the Letterman taping yesterday and thought I’d put my 2 cents in. I waited for a couple of hours at the backstage door along with everyone else, so no news there. I was lucky enough, however, to be a guest of someone on the VIP list, as were 2 other people. We were in the first group of people ushered into the theater. After the warm-up girl did her thing (telling people not to woo-woo or whistle, do laugh at all of the jokes, etc.), just the 4 of us were escorted into the balcony during Moz’s soundcheck! Apparently, Morrissey had requested that no one be present in the theater to watch the soundcheck, so we stayed in the shadows of the balcony and tried not to swoon, sing along or squeal! He looked beautiful as always. He was wearing a long black coat and I think a gray scarf tucked in. After the soundcheck, Moz was talking to the rest of the band. It was surreal to see him in non-performance mode. He appeared to be joking around with Jesse and Deano and making them laugh. I’m not sure if he noticed us in the balcony staring him down, but after a bit he began inching over to exit the stage and at one point hid behind a column before finally leaving. It was then safe for us to take our seats - I was front row center and had a fantastic view. When everyone else joined us a little while later, there were lots of regulars in the front row with us as well as scattered in the balcony. When it was apparent that Moz was searching for his people right before the taping, I tried waving frantically to get his attention. It eventually worked, along with the others who were screaming and waving. The only other thing I have to say is that the performance of just FOTGTD left me wanting more.... And so did the priest outfit. Yum.

So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses' I danced my legs down to the knees
  • Don't get me wrong I love MOZ but the Letterman show Moz looked very bored and I swear he rolled his eyes once. I don't think the vocals came through too well. His performance on Kilborn was much much better.

  • Just watched Letterman off tape in England... He introduced Moz in the usual way (with the album plug)...the Editor went straight to 'First Of The Gang To Die', then the show finished, about four minutes in total.
If only they would cut out the tedious bit at the start (Letterman doing his topical U.S. 'comedy' bit, which is over our heads in England) for the English re-run...they may just fit all of the guest's in.
Or just cut the house band out altogether.

  • I'm in awe, and I was just passing time before the show started, and saw on MuchMoreMusic that they played a Smiths music video. I don't remember what song it was, but I have it taped at home and it was just awe-inspiring, my goodness, and then to see him on David Letterman, mmm, mmm! Swell!
