  • The Royal Oak Music Theatre is where I first saw the Smiths, and if I could have been there tonight I would have. Hope the show was great, and I'm dying to konw all the details. See everyone in New York next week.

    but the reason isn't rain
    and the reason isn't snow...

I could say more, but you get the general idea.

I'd love to join you kittens tomorrow but I'll be carving pumpkins with Sally Cinnamon and The Two Dwarves instead...HOWEVER...here's something to chew on. It's a work in progress, but it will be finished soon.

  • The crowd was terrible. Don't get me wrong, there were some wonderful people, but all the drunks and the kids up front who were trying to start a mosh just ruined the show for me. Without the jerks, it would've been a fantastic show, but as it was, I'm wondering if I should've done something else with my night off.

Also, I loved the venue. It's a shame so few bands play there, as Royal Oak is much nicer than Detroit or Pontiac.

  • Moz took the stage at 9:10, finished about 10:30. Opened with HSIN...like the last tour, this is a very good opener, as it brings the whole place to their feet (even those who cannot name a Moz solo song if their life depended on it).

Crowd (and the venue) were much better than Ann Arbor (May07) and a tad better than Detroit State Theater (Oct04), except for the occasional drunk guys who know only HSIN and have apparently not heard of an invention called deodorant. About 10 crowd surfers made it close the stage, but only 2-3 actually got on stage. Always fun to get to know your neighbors/peers when Moz reaches out for the hands and tosses out the shirts.

  • Set list was as follows (I may have one or two songs slightly out of place; in general, very similar to the Wed. night in Waukegan, IL):

How Soon is Now? / Tomorrow / Sister, I'm A Poet / London / The Loop / Jack The Ripper / Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself? / Stretch Out And Wait / I Like You / The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores / Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me / Billy Budd / All You Need Is Me / Death Of A Disco Dancer / I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris / One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell / Shoplifters Of The World Unite / Irish Blood, English Heart / You Have Killed Me / Life is a Pigsty / Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before // First Of The Gang To Die

    7 Smiths songs in total!

Still haven't heard Please Please Please live (he skipped it in the May07 show in Ann Arbor). Was also hoping for a two-song encore. Must scream louder next time?

  • Decent show...the setlist in ann arbor was better. I did not enjoy the crowd up front. a bunch of beer drinkers. one screaming to morrissey, "You mother fucker!! Play The Smiths!!"

fuck you asshole...i looked back at you and really wanted to punch you. don't come next time.

and to all the people who cared more for beer...don't bother coming to the show next time.

all the assholes were age 40 or above. what's up with that?

  • This was my third Morrissey gig, and about my 100th show I've ever been to, and I am quite disturbed by how mean and angry many people were. I don't know if it was the "aging hipsters" who don't know how to enjoy a gig as they stand with their arms crossed with no expression or the Oakland Co. pseudo poshness. I've always been able to dance at a show, or sing to the songs without being punched by a person, let alone a man (which happened to me). If you can't deal with being close, go sit in the mezzanine! On the bright side, Moz sang many tunes that I love, except hairdresser on fire, which I am still waiting to hear live. And I was one of the lucky ones to make it on stage, until another misogynistic security guard pulled me off and pushed me away with much force. I am not going to get bent out of shape about it however, and claim that I could do something better on my friday night, because it was still a great show put on by the moz.

  • I'm sure this is common at other shows, but WHY do people bring their significant others who clearly do NOT want to be there, do NOT know any Moz/Smiths songs, and just stand there with their hands folded, surrounded by passionate fans who like to sing along and get into the music? I counted a dozen of these buffoons (and they looked like they came straight from the office, and just removed their necktie). My wife is not a huge Moz/Smiths fan by any stretch, but she at least let the music move her and really enjoyed the experience.

I was once taken to a hard techno show (the kind that starts at 2 AM) and even though I don't have one techno song in my collection, I at least made an attempt to get into the music, talk to people, dance, etc.

Seriously, if someone you invite does not show any interest when you present them with the ticket, just leave them at home with the TV, kids, dog, cat, etc.

  • This was probably the best Morrissey show that I have ever attended. That is largely due to the wonderful company. I met some great new friends. Alester (you rock my brother), Angela, Jeff, Lucas, David, Eric and Joe...thank you. Harris, yet again, you are one in a million! Moz was amazing! The setlist didn't change much but it was great to begin with. He was very interactive and flexed for us as he exitted the stage. As we were lucky to get center left on the stage rails, I got to shake his hand three times. Harris caught the first shirt and saved a large piece for me. It smells heavenly!! I was hoping that he would reference the Smiths attendence at the RO Music Theatre, but no. The venue was quaint but the staff was terrible. They siphoned the line into two lines, one with ticket fast and one with standard tickets. They let the ticketfast holders in first, eventhough my group was there as early as 4am! Then they had everyone wait at another set of doors for another ten minutes. They just weren't prepared. The staff was rude and the security were cruel at times. I was not pleased with Romt but luckily they do not have many shows there. Overall, it was an amazing night. My heart is now full.....

  • For being a fan of Morrissey for over twenty years and seeing him many, many times and this being the 4th show I have seen this year, it was great and it was a great experience for my daughter who is 4 and has become a fan over the last couple of years from her trips with mom and dad and hours of listening to the Smiths and Morrissey. Everyone gave me a thumbs up for bringing my kid and she is a true fan. She loves the music. It is all she talked about for the last 3 weeks. That she was going to see Morrissey. She too loved the show and on the way to the car, she said," tomorrow can we go see it Iggy Pop. She is cute like that. But too the drunks and pot heads at the show. First off there is no smoking, second off, if you can't be a responsible drinker, dont drink. I saw people over 40 at the show while exiting that could not even stand. Too the potheads that are so stupid that they can not have fun at a show unless they are high, Stay home you hippie dipshits. My kid does not have to inhale your bad habits. It was an all ages show and there were other younger kids there. I go to a Morrissey show to relax and enjoy my idol. Not to worry if my daughter is getting a contact high.
All I have to say is that these potheads are lucky I could not figure out who you were, because my 6'9" 270 pound self would have left my daughter with my wife and dragged your ass out of the theatre. Sorry for the anger. I just think that others should not have to deal with others bad habits. The best show I have seen lately was the show in Chicago that he did on his stop over from Mexico to Rome. He did that 1 sold out show in Chicagoat the Aragon and that theatre is amazing. It was by far the best show I have seen in years. But last night was another great expeience. Lets hope he still tours in the future.

  • I am always pleased with the incredibly nice people that I meet at the shows. That's not to say that there aren't a gaggle of philistines on hand, but I always meet at least a dozen really nice people. I was about 3 souls away from the front, dead center, and those around me danced and sang and talked cheerily before the show. We even were able to tear up Moz's shirt without too much incident (my goodness it smelled good, almost like incense). As the only practicing Lutheran in the crowd I was well received, except in line, where a few jaded neophytes made some hideous abortion jokes, if that's possible, it must have been my "got Jesus?" shirt.
I was especially impressed by the quality of the latest version of Moz's boys. These are definitely professionals. Also Moz's voice never sounded better than the bars of "Last Night I Dreamt..." I would probably give my right arm to hear "Still Ill" one of these days...
I've seen Kristeen Young twice now and want to yell something that won't sound like "I love you" or "You're so incredible." (Even though I do and she is.) I'll try to think of something appropriate next time.
It was nice meeting you Carlton and Lisa, enjoy the shirt. Of course I saved the biggest piece for Jenn! Go Team Morrissey.

Love, peace, and harmony...maybe in this world!

  • what an amazing show the 4 hour drive was so very worth it, and the after party was a lot of fun, lots of cute girls and i ended up hooking up with a girl who didnt like morrissey go figure, my new york dolls shirt was a hit, and his setlist was phenominally good. Lots of great songs that he did i really like his new songs. To see people crowd surf at a morrissey show was a little different who crowd surfs during a morrissey show? I would say that this show is a tie with the cleveland show i attended.

  • I personally thought the Royal Oak show sucked. The sound was horrid. I actually thought this crowd was tame compared to State Theatre 10/04 where the general adm crowd was psychotic. These folks were tame, except for the HUGE girl stage right who punched me in the jaw while diving for that black Je Suis or whatever it said shirt. I personally enjoy hitting and shoving people out of my way. I was front row stage right and I felt Morrissey appeared bored. Same fricken shit, same poses, same general attitude, different night. Why does he continue to do this? He needs a COMPLETE makeover and a stylist. He's far too chubby to be dis-robing. Another thing I'm sick of Morrissey doing is dissing other people. That's tired. What also is disrespectful is him dissing Kid Rock IN DETROIT no less. I don't give a rat's ass if you like Kid Rock or not, or you are against fur, or whatever you need to do to occupy your mind from the REAL problem, its rude as F**K to slam someone in their home town. He does that alot. As much as I love Morrissey's tunes, he's mean and everyone knows it. People are always more important than animals. Why does he continue to down others that eat meat or wear fur. Who cares. I'm mean really. People are priority, must be nice to people first or how can you care for anything else, including ducks or birds or dogs or whatever. (Yawn) Can't wait for the Led Zeppelin reunion - now THERE's something to get exited about.

I asked someone in the lobby and they said some crazy, drunk sorority chick was trying to fight the security guards and the cops after some huge ex-marine looking dude kicked the crap out of her down in the pit. Did anyone see any of that happen? I was in the back and missed everything!
