Its F.A. Cup time again on Football Focus, BBC Televisions only remaining sport programme of any worth. I become strangely comforted by the site of John Motson at a snow covered Non-League ground in his familiar sheepskin. Today Dagenham and Redbridge are competing in the F.A. Cup. People in Dagenham were interviewed being asked what indeed, if anything, Dagenham was famous for. Most replied by saying Ford cars as there is a Ford Factory there. However, one noted individual when asked what Dagenham was famous for said, "That song by Morrissey"!!!

Nice to see even the cockney man in the street still remembers the Great One!

  • and didn't instantly recognise the background tune, until the Morrissey mention.

P.S A couple of Smiths related questions on Mark and Lard's pop quiz type thing (quite good actually) on UK Play this lunchtime.

However, contrary to Mark asking which band had the original line-up of Mike Joyce, Andy Rourke, Johnny... (he was cut off with someone buzzing in with the correct answer). Wasn't Dale (studio engineer/bassist) a part of the original line-up? Afterall he played the first gig and did an interview with Johnny and Morrissey as The Smiths.

  • Yes, BBC's Grandstand is the best programme for music on British TV at the moment!
Their researchers must be closet Morrissey fans.
They have used Morrissey and Smiths songs on several occasions as a backdrop to sports features along with the Stone Roses, Charlatans etc.
It was great to see "Dagenham Dave" used for the feature on the Dagenham V Ipswich Cup tie.
Incidently, I was in that neck of the woods a fortnight ago. The East End of London has been championed by Mozz on a number of occasions in his songs and interviews.
I travelled to West Ham Utd to watch Liverpool in action. I stumbled upon the East Ham Working Mens Club but unfortunately not the "West Ham Boys Club" (of Mozz T-shirt fame).
Oh, and the other week I was walking down the Fulham Road (mentioned in opening track on Malajusted) - I was on my way to Chelsea FC to see Liverpool get stuffed 4-nil!

  • Somebody at the BBC is definitely a huge Smiths and Morrissey fan. Their music is on Match of the Day, other sports stuff and god knows what else all of the time. What a guy.

  • On a similar theme, I was very surprised during a footy programme that Mark Lawrenson (the moustachioed one) was able to immediately identify The Smiths when asked by his co-presenter if he could name any of the backing tracks in the previous clip. Another sporting Smiths mention was from Mike Atherton who was England cricket captain at the time. The commentator said to Athers, "You always have a Walkman on when you are sat on the bench in the pavilion, what is it you are listening to?". Athers replied that he usually listened to the Smiths. Which could be an explanation for the succession batting collapses.....
