I found a great painting of Morrissey by one of my favourite comedians, Vic Reeves. Its not that flattering, but as a huge Moz fan I still loved it.

You can view the painting online: Vic Reeves @ Britart.com (click on thumbnail for enlarged image).

Its also on display at Reeves exhibition at the Britart museum, 60-62 Commercial Street, London E1.

  • For those who don't know, Vic Reeves is Jim Moir, a name that you will find in special thanks credits for the "Sing Your Life" single.

  • And I think that is is horrible. Captures nothing.
I hope your talents are better in comedy. I doubt it though.

  • and then of course there was 'Morrissey the consumer monkey' on the Reeves and Mortimer shows.

I actually don't mind the portrait. Art isn't meant to flatter is it? It's more of a caricature and as such it's OK. I don't think it is at all rude.

      • It's a puppet that appeared in "Vic & Bob's big night out" TV show. I never thought it was terribly funny. The 'consumer' bit is because the puppet is supposedly concerned with 'consumer' issues ( we have a programme in the UK called 'Watchdog' - stupid people phone in and say "I bought a sofa from World of Leather for £5 and it has already fallen apart after only 10 years. How can I get my money back?").Perhaps Bob was perpetuating the Morrissey/moaning/ miserabilism theme. But, heavens, icons are going to be charicatured. Would Morrissey prefer that no-one ever talked about him? In later series Vic & Bob used Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding puppets. It's flattery really Moz. I don't understand how 'Jim Moir' ever got on to a Morrissey record. Are C.Langer/ Winstanley to blame?

        From The NME April 1991
And what of Morrissey, object of gentle fun and would-be stomper?
"Well, I loved The Smiths. And it appears I'm one of the few people who likes the new Morrissey album. I think he's a true genius. Because I love good lyrics. That's why I like Mark E Smith. Anyway, I was up at Hook End (Oxfordshire recording studio) one weekend and I met him. I sang backing vocals on 'That's Entertainment’ actually, though they could have rubbed my bit off (they haven't). And he said he wanted to come on the show and do a bit of stomping. But he didn't turn up. Which is fair enough.
“He liked it when we had him in the septic tank in the first series. I think he understands that we're not having a dig. And he was perfect for the consumer monkey. Originally, it was going to be Freddie Mercury but he's a figure of fun already.”

From a review of Vic & Bob’s “Big Night Out”. “Morrissey The Consumer Monkey, the watchdog primate who loves Vic as if he were his very own lump of fat. After a delightful sing-song about mail order, Mozza rides off into the distance on a piece of string.”

From an interview with Morrissey, Q Sept ‘92
Q: Do you have any thoughts on Vic Reeves' creation, Morrissey The Consumer Monkey?
I saw it for a split second and instantly loathed its creator. It was meant to be hurtful. I've met Vic Reeves a few times and it hasn't gone too well. He is a person who cannot close his mouth for three seconds because he feels he'll disintegrate into a bowl of dust. He has to keep going on and on and on. Completely loathsome. Bob Mortimer, I liked. I think he should make a hasty exit from that duo. Can you smell the venom?

  • I think it's okay. They fell out though, didn't they? Probably over the monkey... I heard once that Spring-Heeled Jim was a veiled attack on Vic/Jim. But I don't know how true that is!

That "portrait" was also featured in Vic's "Sunboiled Onions" book from a few years back, with the accompanying text:

"Morrissey the singer is seen here thinking about who to ring in order to get his loose tiles replaced in his kitchen. He may, in a few hours, try ringing Talking Pages for assistance, in turn they may recommend a tiling firm or in a few hours more he may decide to replace them himself, days later he will drive to Tile Kingdom in Hulme but sadly it will be closed as it is Bank Holiday so he will replace them with cardboard."
