There was a really nice article written about Morrissey in the "Independent On Sunday" (back of the 1st section) this week (1st September). It was very fair-minded, covered the media persecution, but was not fawning (described Kill Uncle as truly awful, and rightly gave short-shrift to Southpaw and Maladjusted). Says how Morrissey truly stands alone, and that he is sorely missed by many in his home country (not everyone here hates you! I actually live in Germany but you know what I mean!!!). "Morrissey: Heaven knows if he's miserable now" by Mark Simpson - The Independent, Sept. 1, 2002

i really don't understand why Edward and so many people think "Kill Uncle" is such a terrible album.

other than "Mute Witness" and "Asian Rut", i think the songs are quite good. and even those two songs have their moments. (both at the very end.)

can you believe that some guy named Edward sold a copy of Kill Uncle on vinyl signed by the band? i know because my girlfriend bought it.

  • This article is, in my humble opinion, further evidence of a turning tide. It makes me somewhat proud to have stood by and held my ground for so many years. Those of you who have been along for the ride since the early eighties may be feeling the same way. Maybe I'm just being dramatic. Who knows. Another good read appeared in the Rocky Mountain News the day of the Fillmore show.

  • ...is a good writer, and has always written very well about our Moz. When's your book coming out, Mark?

As for Kill Uncle, most of the songs are fine, but the production of the album is just so limp-wristed! The lads infused those songs with a shambling live energy and they became better. I always thought there should've been an official Kill Uncle live tour album. I do like the piano-based album cut of There's a Place..., though.

  • I would strongly disagree that it would be "right" to "short-shrift" Southpaw Grammar or Maladjusted.

  • Kill Uncle was ruined by the production, and the songs only rescued live, I agree that was a career low, and Maladjusted I could live without other than perhaps the title track, but Southpaw?. After Vauxhall & I, it is the album I play most often, Teachers, and The Operation being the best tracks, but I get the impression it is not generally liked by the Morrissey-Solo community.
This may be that as I grew up in the Vauxhall district of South London that I related to the period of Morrissey's output from Arsenal to Southpaw more than his earlier stuff. Its romanticised, nostalgic but perceptive look at the white working class world of skinhead gangs, jack the lads, and old kent road pubs is one that will always be my favourite albums, I find it hard to believe I will feel so strongly about the new songs written during his LA semi retirement.

  • Kill Uncle IS the worst album that Morrissey recorded in his entire career, but "Sing Your Life" and "Asian Rut" are among his best songs. still, "Mute Witness" is very poor!!
