Please see above link to an excellent article in the review section of today's (12th) Independent, Morrissey is featured on the cover of the Review supplement, which is headlined "the last pop star - The cultural significance of Morrissey". The writer is a self confessed Smiths obsessive.

Good to read an article in the UK national press written by someone who actually knows/cares about our man...

If Morrissey set out on this current tour with the aim of increasing his profile to further his chances of snagging a record deal, then he's certainly doing something right! With the sell out shows and positive publicity it can only be a matter of time until someone somewhere bites, and hopefully a fair few detractors will be kicking themselves for passing up the opportunity just months before...

He's got the British press on his side at the moment it seems... the old cliche of "absence makes the heart grow fonder" never sounded more resonant...

  • I still don't trust the press one bit as I'm sure old Mozzer doesn't, this is a decent article....but for every writer like this there is a Steven 'NME' Wells waiting for the Moz just to say something a little out of context, It's about time he was given some credit in the U.K considering the drivel that is championed here. For too long now he has been treated like a criminal which is in itself criminal also, he's one of a very few icons left.....I hope he makes the cynics eat every word letter by letter!

  • The Independent may have run a feature on Moz, but to see this as a glowing endorsement by the Fleet Street fraternity is misguided. Firstly, the article; strangely titled 'the cultural significance of Morrissey', had little real substance. It was, to coin a phrase, pap. Merely nostalgic bumph pushed to white 30 somethings over their breakfast coffees. Morrissey does not need to prove himself to the English/British fans, as the sold out dates at the Albert Hall highlight. But, the national press is a different story. Morrissey could still be the boy with the media shaped thorn in his side.

  • godammit, i normally read the independent but not that day.......why god! btw, there was a full page on morrissey in the daily mirror on friday i think it was.....it hasn't been mentioned here so far so i can only assume that all other morrissey lovers stick to broadsheets only....:) (i only read the mirror cos my stepdad buys it....don't lynch me!!) it was the usual badly researched article not saying anything new, just general knowledge rehashed with the usual lashings of cliches, the two pictures of moz took up most of the page. it had two quotes from him there, but they were taken from an interview i read on here (that phone one), about him saying he only had integrity left, blah blah. so absolutely nothing new, but i was still quite chuffed to see a paper such as the mirror featuring morrissey rather than ignoring him and occasionally referencing him spitefully!
