The following message comes from ASTRA, the promoter of the Athens shows of Moz, on the 5th and 6th of October...

Listen to this:

Earlier today, we received an e-mail from Moz's agent, informing us, that due to sudden illness in the "touring entourage" (????????), they regret to inform us that the two scheduled live gigs for tomorrow, 5th, and Sunday, 6th of October in Athens, and more specifically at our venue "Gagarin 205", will not happen!!!

We know that many people are probably already on their way to Athens, to see Morrissey live, but we haven't got any means of communicating this sudden news to them, so, in case you have any friends travelling to Athens for the shows, we kindly ask you to inform them asap!

Thank you in advance

I just got a phone call (1:50 am PST on October 4th) from the ticket Vendor for the Greece shows. The lady (who didn't speak English very well) said that both shows have been cancelled because according to her "Mr Morrissey is feeling ill." That was all the information she had.

Gozzer also writes:

It was announced today that Morrissey cancelled his two gigs in Athens (5, 6 October at the Gagarin 205 club). The promoters that booked him (Astra) were circulating a press release, blaming the cancellation to "Morrissey being ill". Regardless to say that noone believes this story here. There is no information about the dates being rescheduled.

It has been officially announced that Moz's gigs in Athens have been postponed due to its illness.Concerts may take place in November or during the 2003 tour.

It is a bad habit to express an opinion over something, when you don't know the facts, dear friend.

I myself happen to be Moz's fun, so I'm truly disappointed by this sudden cancelation, not to mention that I also have to console those who have flown all the way to Athens, just to see their favorite artist live! (A few hours ago I helped Peter Melis from Brussels to find another flight back home, since his return ticket was issued for Tuesday morning! Such a shame!)

I wish Moz himself respected these people as much as we do.

In case we haven't yet expressed how we feel about this sudden development, well, we are absolutely shocked by the incident. Today we had to answer more than 100 telephone calls. It's such a shame Moz doesn't respect all these people, not only Greek funs, but also all those who are probably travelling this time we speak to Athens...

Surprise surprise then, we don't believe a word of it when he blows out Athens....

So he'll get 25% of the profits from all the tours, record sales, record advances, licensing fees, merchandise sales, and any other source of income.

And he has admitted (since the court case ended of course) that he was told by Johnny early on the the life of the Smiths that he and Andy would have to accept a lower percentage than Moz and Johnny, if they wanted the Smiths to go on. They didn't argue at the time, but waited until the Smiths split up so that Moz and Johnny wouldn't have the option of replacing them.

Does he ever give an explanation for this? The answer is no, just collects his money and runs.Great music, but does he care - no. Wake Up Mozz fans.

Gigs cancelled in Canada, Germany, Athens... who's next!? This is unacceptable because a lot of fans travel very far to see his concerts.

I don't blame Morrissey as a person because I don't know what's really happening in the background but the whole affair is very unprofessional.

  • well well well, here we go again.

Sadly it seems like this is a part of the package. We love it when Morrissey does whatever he feels like whenever he feels like, as long as it doesn't affect us personally. Like if he doesn't feel like accepting a record deal, he doesn't, and by that he's making a statement. If he doesn't feel like give an interview, he doesn't. One could think he should be perhaps more loyal to his fans, but come on, this is the way he is, and you all know it. We love his personality, he's just true to himself and taking control of his life. It's sad that it affects the ones who love him, but is a fact. I traveled to see him in Paris and I felt unsure whether or not the show was going to happen even the same day, you never know with Morrissey.

I feel for you I really do.

But don't blame him, don't hate him.
he's the one who has given us so much.

Listen-- hundreds of bands tour every day and how often do you hear them cancelling for any reason other than lack of ticket sales? And that's usually the promoters doing the cancellation. I've never seen anybody cancel like Morrissey does. I won't make excuses for him because he's unprofessional, moody and unreliable. Even back in the Smiths days he'd just not show up to various committments. I don't blame Marr for taking off.

When you schedule a show it is a committment. Not only do the fans lose out, but the promoter loses money, the venue loses money, and the people who work the show (bouncers, bartenders, security, concessions) lose money they counted on.

I recall driving three hrs once to see him and he frikkin' bailed an hr before the show was to start! I can't imagine how people flying to Sweden or wherever feel!

The last time I had tickets, he didn't even bother cancelling until show time. A girl walked by car in the parking lot and she just looked at me and said "Hope your not here for the Morrissey show because it just got cancelled."

  • As I mentioned earlier in a previous post Morrisseys inability to arrange his tour leaves a lot of people making travel arrangements and organising accomodation for concerts in other countries because the dates are announced one or two at a time. It seems to me that if all the dates were announced together at least a cancellation in any country would affect fewer people travelling great distances. If there is any doubts about certain concerts Morrissey should try to keep the inconvenience to fans to a minimum. This tour has been a sham from start to finish, dates released in a staggered fashion and then cancelled after people might have made arrangements to travel to another country on the off chance that he won't announce a date in their own. He knows this website exists and yet makes no apologies or contact with his few remaining fans. My thoughts are with those who had tickets for all the cancelled shows.

I understand being upset, especially if it happens to you (been there, done that LV '99) But as far as being 'obligated' to your needs over his own is quite selfish on your part, don't you think? Ponder on that children, and you will slap your own hand for your selfish comments......

People are making all the same negative comments again, but a lot of you don't really know what you are talking about either. Yes, he cancels all the time. We all know this. But to say that he is just taking everyones money and running to the bank is just complete lunacy. I am really sorry for the people that lost money on these cancelations, because I know EXACTLY how it feels. But everytime we purchase tickets for his shows, book flights or hotels, we all know that we are taking this chance. If you are gonna say stuff like you are "Over all of his bullsh!t" or "Sick of the way he treats his fans, and never going to buy tickets to see him again," then follow through with it, so the next time this happens, you don't have to come to this site and repeat all of your whining.

  • Being a Moz fan for about 14 years now I still cannot understand why he's still getting away with cancelling gigs and never giving a decent explanation. A best friend of mine (Peter Melis) flew to Athens, gigs cancelled, got robbed and this all for going to watch an artist who still succeeds in not fulfilling his commitments! Please stop the nonsense about he's only human, blablablah!!! I'm sure it never was his intention to play Athens, reason unknown, but why didn't he send out a fax on Friday morning so people didn't have to travel the globe for nothing, spending a lot of money and risking to get robbed etc...What about the loyalty to his fans??? I hope it will open their eyes!!!

If you want to forgive him everytime he gives his fans and everyone working for him the stiff middle finger then go ahead--but don't dog the people who spent hundreds of dollars trying to see him. That's really creepy.

    The guy's a frikkin' song-writer, not God.

There are fans, then there idol worshippers and then there are creepy obsessed fans who defend a man who would't know their name if it was printed on their foreheads! Come on--grow up.
