I picked up the new Tim Burgess ( the Charlatans front man ) single entitled "I Believe In The Spirit". There seems to be a Morrissey mention in the song. There are many references to L.A. and the west coast in the song. At one point near the end he sings "I believe in the Morrissey". It's a pretty unique sounding song and the shout out to his fellow ex-patriot makes it all the better.

Update: 09/06 16:37 GMT: According to several comments below, the lyric is actually 'morning sun', not 'Morrissey'.

  • In one of his recent interviews, he expressed the same frustration that we all have about Morrissey -- that he's just not trying hard to enough to get records out.

Tim is catching a lot of flak for appropriating the L.A./California culture as his new identity, as well as his falsetto, but I think his solo stuff is pretty good. "Be My Baby" is a great song. The others ranges from average to good.

Anyway, it *does* sound like he namechecks Moz at around 2:17. Are the lyrics printed in the single?

  • I don't have a band yet, and I can't sing to save my life, but I plan to put out an ad in the local newspaper and get some lads together so we can cover "Suffer Little Children" in an acoustic only version. It should sound like poop.

Will this make it to the site David?

  • Isn't it 'morning sun'?

  • I don't think he *does* mention Morrissey - I think he's singing "I believe in the morning sun" as a previous poster mentioned - but you can make up your own mind, there's a link to the video from the NME site [nme.co.uk]

  • It is quite possibly the worst song I've ever heard. And I thought Richard Ashcroft was a pretentious arsehole.

  • This song has Jesus Christ using Morrissey in a sentence.

"meetings with remarkable men (show me the hero)"

i had a lovely brunch with Jesus Christ. He said, "two words about inanity: fundamental christianity." the food was very nice. but then He had to go and die for my sins and stick my ass with the check. "show me a hero and i’ll write you a tragedy," (go near an open window and that’ll be the end of me). i bowed before the avatar. he said, "the problem’s clear to me: you never got over Morrissey." i said "well, right you are!" "it’s so much harder to be underfed than under-understood," he said.

  • Does anybody here know the Meat Beat Manifesto track "Mindstream"? I like to pretend that Jack is singing "... things aren't too clear, and the Morr-i-ssey, things disappear ...". Its fun to pretend.

  • I got the whole album the other day, and the lyrics are printed in the booklet. And he doesn't mention Morrissey at all but he does sing "I believe in the MORNING SUN".
    So, there...

  • So this ends up on the front of this site, despite not even being true? Did Tim Burgess pay for this advertising or what?

He's a bore, and anyone that goes to LA and tries to adopt whatever 'culture' is supposed to be found there annoys me intensely. Is ultra-capitalism and absolute materialism CULTURE?!? i dont think so, somehow. I think it's the antithesis of culture, actually.

  • This is singularly the most pathetic posting by Tseng or any retarded, snivelling, Morrissey fanatic loser for that matter. Not only is Burgess completely misquoted ("morning sun"), but the notion alone that some sad sack is scraping the barrels of culture looking for any, no matter irrelevant, references to Morrissey. My God!!! Get a fucking life! The guy's releasing an album soon...hang on, for god's sake!!

  • Well said Ramon, there are too many people creaming themselves at the merest whiff of the Moz name. What next ? "Britney's new album to use the letter 'M' in its title" ?

Get a life - or better still check out the new Stephen Duffy album, the best British lyricist since Nick Drake and who has released, um, FOUR SUPERB albums since Morrissey last troubled the new releases rack in HMV.
