I was listening to kevin and bean this morning on KROQ (Los Angeles radio), and after a song by hot hot heat (playing at the Inland Invasion show) - that they have been swamped with calls and emails that they should have tried to get the Smiths back together or got Morrissey on the bill. This, as you know, is the concert that has all the 80's bands playing - the cure, duran duran, psych furs, soft cell, etc etc etc.

They said that they actually DID try to contact morrissey to play the show and that once they finally DID get a hold of his "people" not even THEY knew where he was or how to get in contact with him. Seems kinda strange seeing as people from moz solo seem to bump into him all the time.

have to admit though - that would be an AWESOME show to see morrissey at. I would think if he wasn't playing he would at least show up and watch some of the bands. perhaps richard butler will play his version of 'how soon is now' in homage.

  • Craig Kilbourne was on Howard Stern today. Howard inquired about Craig's taste in music and he mentioned Morrissey.

    I think Howard is on KROQ NYC.

  • when the show was first announced....
    he told me they did contact him, but that Morrissey said he didn't want to play a Flashback Gig, cause he considered himself Current....
    Don't know if this is true...but thats what I was E-mailed.

  • Can you imagine what an orgasmic gig that'd ov been?!! Havent seen Moz since 2000. So I'm jonesing to see the King live again. I thought it was funny how Moz's "people" don't even know where he is. I love that bout him. I think KROQ should ov rang him up at his mam's house in Manchester. He's probly at home watching repeats of Coronation street or Fawlty Towers.

    I agree with Morrissey's absence from this lineup, whether it be because he was unreachable or because he chose to not participate. Let's face some facts here:

    1) Most of the bands who are on the ticket are washed-up and useless except for nostalgic purposes. They are small club material. The Psychedelic Furs cannot fill a decent sized club in any city, nor could Bow Wow Wow, General Public, Marc Almond, Berlin or God forbid, Dramarama;
    2) Some of the bands are second tier talent namely Hot Hot Heat and Fountains of Wayne;
    3) Others have potential but don't belong on the bill, namely Interpol and Dashboard Confessional;
    4) The four truly interesting bands are the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Duran Duran and the Violent Femmes. Of those, all claim to be actively producing new music. I am not inclined to believe that they have any belief that their new music will be good or well received.

    The fact that Morrissey is not committing to this kind of lineup does show that he is not willing to be classed as an 80s superstar. He was active in the 80s, he was active in the 90s and here we are talking about him now. We talk about his upcoming album, we hope for tours, we wait with baited breath for any comments he may make. Can any of those other bands say that? Is anyone trailing Ian McCullough, Simon LeBon or Gordon Gano like that? Morrissey's music, whether recorded in 1984 or yesterday is still alive and evolving in meaning. None of the others have that lasting musical effect.

    I am happy he is not agreeing to play a show with the Temptations, Supremes and VanDells of our era.

    Do you have a vacancy for a back-scrubber?
  • i'd say that Interpol are the stand out (and perhaps only truly relevant) act on this bill.

    The only band that Moz should be seen with perhaps...?

    The single 'Say hello to the angels' is clearly very Smiths influenced. They'd make a great support on the next Moz tour...

  • Can't you see?

    Morrissey is one of those rare artists that just doesn't exist anymore.

    Much like Norma Desmond in 1950's Sunset Blvd., Moz himself is a real gem.

    In a time where you must be on MTV or be heard on KROQ in order to be a *successful* band/artist;
    Moz does not give in to modern tripe and knows he can't be a [modern-day] teen idol,
    although he is to millions.

    Okay, before you satrt barkin', you all need to go and watch Sunset Blvd.,
    starring Gloria Swanson.

    After you viewed, replace Norma with Mozza and you might get the picture (no pun intended).

    ...well, what are ya waitin' fer?

    go and see the picture!
