Quoted from anonova.com

"A song which describes a werewolf looking for beef chow mein in Soho contains rock music's greatest opening line, according to a poll.

Werewolves Of London was a minor hit in 1978 for American singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. The song beat famous tracks by Pink Floyd, Morrissey and the Rolling Stones to the title of Greatest Opening Song Line."

List of all top 16 songs here.

As an aside, I thought the opening line was "trudging slowly OVER wet sand..."

  • Good to see Warren Zevon getting some credit - and 'Werewolves' is not even his best song, though it is quite a catchy little number, and its opening line is cool. 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' easily merits its high position too, of course!

Only 243 hits for one of the greatest opening lines (and one of the finest Morrisey songs) of all time? Wow. That's sad.
