I was just tuning in to Radio 4 at 7:30 today and I hear a short review about You Are The Quarry and an interview with Simon Armitage (Yorkshire born poet/author) about Morrissey. I wasn't able to transcribe the session, but here are some interesting quotes:
Interviewer: "Heaven knows he's still as miserable as he was 20 years ago. So, Simon, what do you think of this new album?"
Simon Armitage: "Moderately disappointing... The music has got to be as good as it always has been, and for Morrissey it's just getting less and less and less..."
"There are some great moments on this album..."
"But, Where's the wit? Where's the vintage Morrissey?"
"No detail, just abstract statements here I'm afraid."

Simon Armitage quoted lines after lines of classic Morrissey lyrics. He's obviously a fan. It seemed throughout the interview that he was being lead into disapproving of the album by the interviewer ("There isn't really anything good, is there?" and "'Drinking tea with a taste of the Thames' We've heard it all before, haven't we?" although Simon broke out of that one with 'I quite like that line actually'). When he was left to his own devices, his general aura seemed to tell you he was in love with it... but the introduction to the interview was just too dismal to put a shine on it. Sounds like a 3/5 to me, but I'm sure Simon was edging towards 4/5 in his English Heart.

  • a point about the humour (or lack thereof). had el mozzer included "daddy's voice" on the full length, then our friend would not be able to make the very accurate comment that he did.

  • Can I just add... Simon Armitage is from Marsden near HUDDERSFIELD.

    Get in.

  • Morrissey's lyrics are usually full of observational wit, but it's not really the slap-stick stuff and so forth that it used to be. You could level the same criticisms at "Vauxhall" really, couldn't you? It's a little more subtle perhaps. Possibly too subtle for radio 4 ;-)

  • Who was interviewing? John Harris?? And also, what was meant by "the music really needs to be as good as before, but with Morrissey its getting less and less and less...." Is this a criticism of Boz and Alain or of Moz? Please clarify.
