Mojo magazine out in the UK and Ireland today has a huge 10 page interview with Moz which took place both in London and LA. In addition, later in the magazine there is an article regarding the very first Smiths gigs with comments from Joe Moss (ex-Smiths manager), Tony Wilson (Factory Records), Mozzer, Johnny Marr and others.

Finally there is also an ad for the Q/Mojo 148-page collectors edition magazine of The Smiths and Morrissey out on 28 May.

The new Mojo magazine is absolutely chock-full of Moz and Smiths, including a huge article and interview, and loads of pics, one of which is Moz on a lounger by the poll of The Beverly Hills Hotel, surrounded by kids. I will try and get all this scanned and up tonight.

But there is more - listen to this...

"On May 28th, a Q/MOJO Special Edition on Morrissey and The Smiths is published. A handsome brute of a magazine, it is filled with new interviews, commentary, analysis and never-before-seen photography. Also within is an extensive interview with guitarist Johny Marr where, for the first time ever, he recounts a truly extraordinary incident that occurred in the early-to-mid 90's that will have Smiths-dom foaming at the mouth. 'I did reconvene the band', he confirms. 'It was before the court case, not immediately before it, and not because of it. I got us together on Chrissie Hynde's recommendation, because she's smart and she thought that a relationship that had been so important shouldn't be left unresolved. We actually got together a few times, all four of us...'. This special Edition is available under the aegis of Q magazine in the UK and MOJO overseas, including the USA. Go to www.mojo4music.com for more information. Smiths fans, get a stiff drink and be seated..."

So there you have it. Wow. Funny how the quote from Moz they picked for the cover says "The Smiths will end in murder".

  • This is the first ever Mojo cover for our hero (discounting the one with The Smiths...). He was actually due to be the cover star and main feature way back in 1994, promoting Vauxhall And I - but Morrissey, due to some bizarre self-sabotaging antics - botched it. They went with Sting instead (which nearly drove me to murder!).
This was the same time when he cancelled the Carnegie Hall shows at the eleventh hour. Things were so messy back then.

By the way, Let Me Kiss You is a really lovely song. He sings so well on this album...

  • Hell, what? Get together with Moz again Johnny! The two of them could collaborate without Joyce and Rourke - as Marr has mentioned before. (Sorry, dream over now).

May 13th | ADVERT IN MOJO MAGAZINE FOR QW MISLEADING
The ad claims that Johnny Marr would have said in the interview that the Smiths got back together. In a reaction Johnny Marr says: "The advertisement for the Q Smiths supplement was misleading and untrue. In my interview I didn't say or even imply that the four members of The Smiths reconvened. I said that Morrissey and myself got together socially a couple of times in the nineties. My explanation to David Sheppard was very clear and how this information turned into a scoop about a Smiths reformation is beyond me."

    ...and how?
  • he's airbrushed to within 5mm of his life and looks like he has the complexion of a 22 year old, in stark contrast to the pictures inside.

Sad that he is still full of demons - he seems to have a persecution complex. But then a lot of shy people like him find the mere business of dealing with people very difficult and draining.

Meningitis? Brain scans? Is this true?

The picture of him lounging by the swimming pool with the kiddies is adorable! One brat by his side has his hand on his hip in protective stance, the body language stating,"Come closer and I'll knock your teeth out!"

  • It was a little sparse really wasn't it? For £3.80 I'd expect a little more substance and a little less froth, such as rehashing old Smiths discussions and spending literally pages introducing the tiny interview.

Still, it's great to see him on the cover and getting a good review from MOJO.

Next time I buy a mag, I'll go MOJO, but only because they're nice to Mozza :)
