Tony Da Meek writes:

Was listening to Terry Christian's show (on BBC GMR, Manchester) last night. After playing half the album last week, they played a fair few more off the new album as well as B-side Munich Air Disaster 1958.

He announced that next Wednesday's show is a Moz special in the build up to the M.E.N show - every third song will be a Smith's/Moz track with loads of b-sides and rare stuff being played.

Christian mentioned how much he loved the new album and then ripped into Q journalist John Harris for having attacked the album. He gave Harris a right going over and, more or less, said he's always been an arsehole.

It's alleged that Harris was under specific instruction from Q magazine to give Morrissey a hard time after the Moz father had refused a front cover of the mag.

  • John Harris will be talking about Britpop this Sunday on the STEVE LAMACQ Show on BBC 6Music [bbc.co.uk]

I suggest we e-mail Steve Lamacq [mailto] and ask him the tough questions regarding his biased reviews.
Jane Gazzo, whose a Morrissey fan, will also be on the show.

  • What a fine idea by the individual above. Harris is looking incresingly ridiculous after giving a very good/great/astonishing (depending on the source) album such a poor review.

We all know he has his own agenda here, so perhaps it's time for the music journalist to answer *his* critics.

If enough of us email them, surely the question will be asked.

  • ... John Harris also gave a bad review in The Times and NewsNight, so it might be personal.

"... turn popular song into sickness"
  • If that allegation is true, then I'm sorry but Harris is just the dick to end all dicks and his opinion is worth nothing. Initially I kind of thought, well, he's entitled to his opinion, but from what I'd heard of the album I couldn't understand it - then everyone else gave good reviews. If his opinion is based on what the Q editors told him to do then fuck him - you know, that makes me so ANGRY as it is SO unfair!! Mind you, Q's pathetic Clarkson comparison does lend weight to this theory.

  • I'm still fuming about Harris! Before, I just accepted it, but now it appears he wrote his review under editorial instruction I am mad as hell. He has done Moz a disservice and compromised his own professionalism. I intend to e-mail Q to let them know that they've lost a reader and to slag both them and Harris for their unprofessional approach. Whether they print it or not, I don't care, I just want them to realise they're going to lose a bit of dosh and I will also tell them how I intend to advise all my mates about their biased approach to music criticism.

  • After several tip offs (on this site) that John Harris was to be aguest reviewer on Newsnight Review this Friday 14th May night I decided to email the show and have a go at Harris.

Unfortuately, it seems, according to a member of the news night staff who kindly responded, John Harris is not on the show this Friday and neither will 'You Are The Quarry be reviewed. I feel a bit of a prat - so thanks to the twat on this website who put it about that the album was to be reviewed this Friday on the show and Harris was to be on the panel! (see email exchange below)

    ***********************************************
Thank you for your email. John Harris isn't on the panel this Friday, and we aren't reviewing Morrisey (sic). Perhaps you are thinking of a
    different programme?
    Best wishes,

    Newsnight Review - BBC 2

I'm horrified to hear that John Harris is part of the team reviewing Morrissey's 'You Are The Quarry' this Friday. Harris has been peddling
his negative views of this record in every possible press outlet for weeks now: Q magazine and The Times spring immediately to mind. Every
other reviewer has been fair minded and as a result positively welcomed the new album - Harris has gleefully put the boot in with no justification. Obviously he will use his appearance on your show to do so again!! I want Harris to know that I (and many others) think he is a contrary self-serving prat.

Would you like to note my inside-leg?
  • Kind of in reference to Jonners B's post above, is there any way we CAN e-mail or contact the twat Harris himself to express our view? (Obviously, written methods only - I shan't be crank calling him or anything!). I have already e-mailed Q twice (once immediately following the review and once after these allegations had been made) but I would dearly love to put the boot into Harris himself. If Terry Christian is right, he deserves it!
