A rather wonderful review of You Are The Quarry by Nadine McBay over at Drowned in Sound.

  • - a general comment about the silliness of biased people, and yes that includes me, but at least I can see it, ahh, Aristotle ....

This is really silly, can't you see that you are all biased, just like football fans who never see fouls and penalties committed by their own side

it is not a great album is it? it is not career defining, it is not as good as the Smiths, it's not as good as Vauxhall & I, but it's okay ... his lyrics are not as good as he can be and the music is not something that will be spoken of in genius terms, as opposed to Johnny Marr etc will it?

it seems lots of people in the press, who are mostly of the age where they were teenagers when the Smiths were around, are sort of reliving their youth, it always happens ... people go through a good time in the press when their teenage fans get to a position where they can write about their heroes, but it passes, and then we'll see where this album truly lies in the great scheme of things, which is probably below all the Smiths stuff, below Vauxhall, below Arsenal and Viva Hate

BUT, that's not bad, it's good/okay, I suspect 3/5 is what it'll be seen as ... a return to form of sorts, but not inspired, not a work of genius - it's not going to get in the top 100 lp things is it?

Mind you,, having spent 7 years on it, and perhaps chosen form 50 or so songs, this is really a best of the last 7 years!!! Blimey, his next album will be worse than Maladjusted I reckon if he only takes a year

  • Firstly I really like the above review - a well researched piece of pop journalese with pacy prose and good insight.

I really hope YATQ has some hidden treasure because I'm not impressed with the stuff on the singles. Clever song titles do not compensate in the slightest for poor songwriting.

I was hoping YATQ would be a chance for Morrissey to shed the 'pub rock' image. I am bored to death with the same drumming and guitar riffs. I really believe it is time for Alain and Boz to move on. Morrissey needs to completely overhaul how he works and he needs to be around new musicians - new blood and new ideas.

I hope YATQ charms me the way that 'Vauxhall and I' did, and I certainly don't want to listen to it wishing I was listening to 'Bona Drag' or 'Kill Uncle'.
