Quarry gets a mixed review off Jake Kennedy in this month's 'Record Collector'. He has plenty of criticisms, as well as some praise, to offer. The odd thing about his review is that the tracks he praises are exactly the ones most others are having a go at.

Here's the essence of what he said (starting with track specifics then more general things):

America Is Not The World - he likes this one! Says its a strong opener, reminds him of Bowie's 'Quicksand'

IBEH - he says its a good tune but let down by the 'Blink 182' production. Says it could be fantastic if the production was different.

Jesus - he says the best thing about this track is the organs - he says it is similar to 'Margaret On The Guillotine'!

Camden - he hates this, says it sounds "worryingly likr Elton John"

I'm Not Sorry - he says this is insipid, just background music.

Crashing Bores - says Moz gets back on track with this one. Praises some of the lyrics.

Know How I Feel - praises the riffs on this track as reminiscent of past glories but says Moz's lyrics just aren't as good as they used to be.

I Like You - he says Moz sings well on this but basically he doesn't like it - says the inclusion of acid bleeps in completely unnecessary and distracting and just shows off the presence of a new producer.

Let Me Kiss You - likes this - he says it is understated and avoids court-related lyrics.

All The Lazy Dykes - a highlight of the album according to Kennedy! He likes the fact that Moz's lyrics are observational here.

Couldn't Last - he says this is "stunning" and makes up for some of the tat that preceded it.

He says there are some great moments on the album but also some very boring ones. He says some of it sounds like background music.

He complains that Moz spends too much time whingeing about the court case etc.

He says that the latter part of the album makes up for the weak opening stretch - strangely, the very opposite of virtually every other review.

He doesn't like Jerry Finn's production - too pristine, MTV-orientated.

That's about the essence of it, I think.

PS - 3 stars in Record Collector = 'Fans will like it'.

  • The production on IBEH is perfect, it's a breathtaking sound.

If he'd produced it in a prog rock fashion, you can bet your bottom dollar this 'journalist' would have suggested a "Blink 182" production.

  • The production on IBEH is far from perfect. Kennedy is spot on when he says that the "inclusion of acid bleeps" are "completely unnecessary" in I Like You. In fact, they're more than unnecessary - they completely spoil the song. Other annoying touches include the horrible "whooshing" sound at the end of IBEH and the slowed down version of Crashing Bores - what was once a great song is now merely a good song.

Not that it's all bad though. Some of the production is rather good - notably on America Is Not The World, Come Back To Camden and You Know I Couldn't Last. I'm not calling for a "bring back Stephen Street" campaign but I just feel that the production on You Are The Quarry is a tad hit-and-miss.
