Morrissey entered the official UK charts today at #8 with his single "Let Me Kiss You". All three singles taken from You Are The Quarry have now entered the British Top 10; this is the first time Morrissey manages to do so.

This is his 8th Top Ten hit in the UK for him after Suedehead (#5), Everyday Is Like Sunday (#9) [both 1988], The Last Of The Famous International Playboys (#6), Interesting Drug (#9) [both 1989], The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get (#8) [1994] and this year's Irish Blood, English Heart (#3, his best chart position ever) and First Of The Gang To Die (#6).

Now that's what i call a successful year!

  • I thought that IBEH reached #2 in the UK singles chart?
  • So I am guessing that the song sold about 4/5,000 ? I read somewhere that the number 1 sold 10,000. Correct me if I am wrong. Out of the 4/5000 sold how many die hards bought both single cd releases? I guess about 30%? could be wrong. So potentially the tune sold in real terms 3000? Any thoughts?

This, for any Morrissey and Smiths fan, is a truly remarkable feat.

Three singles from an album in the Top 10.

It was unthinkble 5 years ago remember. Frankly, it was unthinkable 15 years ago.

    Great times. Celebrate!

I've been a Morrissey fan for years (bought my first Smiths tape in 1987) and I'm so glad he has finally broken through in England. Screw the U.S. charts- it's all crap anyway. If you want a real chart you have to look to the U.K. Back in '97 I thought Mozzers days were over. For him to come back, record a great CD(and I mean 'Viva Hate' and 'Vauxhall' great), run a strong tour and have three top three singles in the U.K. is hard to believe. I don't think people realize this may be the only time we see this from Morrissey. Sure, the Smiths songs were better but they never had three top ten hits from one album! Look it up if you don't believe me. Hats of to Morrissey and the gang. Enjoy the success, boys and I'll see you live in Austin, Texas on Oct. 29th!

  • At the beginning of the Quarry era, Morrissey seemed poised for an Elvis '68-style comback -- he's done it one better. In years to come, people (including the grumblers and complainers) will look back on this time period in amazement of all Morrissey achieved...

    Morrissey forever!

  • the fact is that the song just isn't very good...let alone a SINGLE. I mean, really now. Is this song Moz's new "Hand In Glove"? A song that he'll put on every future Moz compilation for the next twenty years? Let's hope not. Speaking of which, Nancy's version just for novelty's sake -- when she sings it, then it's so much clearer how bad it is.

  • don't ask me for figures or statistics or anything, but the nice people on the radio said yesterday that single sales were at an all time low last week, so Morrissey really SHOULD have been able to take advantage and get a bit higher in the charts.

and with the power of google....

    from http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/10493.html

Pervy dance music fella Eric Prydz returned to number one in the UK singles charts yesterday, but did so through selling the lowest number of records EVER required to reach the top spot.
'Call On Me' (we won't, thanks) shifted a lousy 23,519 copies last week, the smallest number needed to clinch number one since records began in 1969. To put things into perspective somewhat, Elton John's pisspoor tribute to the late Princess of Wales (you know she's pissing herself at all the grannies falling over in her fountain) sold a whopping 3.4 million in a week. Okay, so that's the highest-ever selling single, but it still illustrates a point.

In other chart news, both Morrissey and Sir Cliff Richard limped zimmer-style into the top ten at eight and nine respectively. You go, you crazy old guys

  • please remember that the fall in record sales is the same for every artist, so it's a level playing feild, non of this you only have to sell a few thousand to get in the charts, well it's still a top 10 hit, if you don't like the song don't buy it. well done mozz, it's been a fantastic year. morrissey for a brit next feb!

It's all well and good sniping about the fact that you don't have to sell as many copies to get to the top of the charts anymore, but it is worth remarking that the UK has the HIGHEST SINGLES SALES OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, by far. And in an average week singles have to shift 50,000 copies to get to the top, which is less, but still comparable, to the amount an album has to sell to get there in the UK. I'd say the state of the singles market was still reasonably healthy, despite the ridiculous BPI regulations that stop bands putting out more than 2 bonus tracks on a single (unless they are remixes) and so on.

What's more annoying is that the BPI commenting on the cases against the 28 serial uploaders, said 'singles sales were at an all time low'. What they failed to mention was that 1) the UK has the largest singles market in the world, so it's not as if we're doing worse than others, 2) the ridiculous singles regulations mean that singles are worse value than before (fewer tracks on average) and 3) companies are purposefully marketing albums harder, with lower prices than 5 years ago, more promotion for albums and less promotion on the singles.

  • In the satirical magazine Private Eye I see that in the UK average UK weekly CD sales amount to 2.5 million whilst CDs distributed 'free' with weekend newspapers number 10 million. I can't verify this but it puts sales figures in perspective don't it? I like 'Let me Kiss you' and bought the three versions of it.

    The Smiths 67 songs + 3 covers + 3 instrumentals
    Morrissey 128 songs + 6 covers
    So 67 + 128 = 195
Moz has written 195 tracks so far (3 times more songs solo than with The Smiths)....unreleased tracks not included.
C'mon Mozza u can make it to 200..
