On 'Closer' inspection, Nichols rules - Boston.com

The smoky Damien Rice ballad "The Blower's Daughter" serves as the theme of Mike Nichols's incisive sex drama "Closer." But it's "How Soon Is Now?," the despairing Smiths song pleading on the soundtrack (at a strip club of all places!), that characterizes the mood of this movie and its four achy-breaky souls: "Shut your mouth. How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human, and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does."

An anonymous person writes:

In the new movie "Closer" with Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Clive Owens, and Natalie Portman, "How Soon is Now?" is played during a key scene in which Owens is asking Portman for information while she strips for him. It's the only noticeable pop song in the movie. Very bizarre mix of half-naked girls and Morrissey vocals.

  • That's a nice little story about our man being in the soundtrack! but frankly i'm just going to see the movie so i can absorb the super hot alpha-male eye candy that is Clive Owen....mmmmmm, tasty!!!

And the songs we sing, they're not supposed to mean a thing...
  • Nothing worse than taking all of your friends for your birthday to see a moive and having it be as awful as CLOSER. I suppose that since Clive Owen and Jude Law both play such perfect ASSHOLES and I left the theatre wanting to remain single forever...they did their job well.

Unfortunately I identified some men in my past who were crazy-obsessive-phsycotics exactly as Jude and Clive play. It really made my stomach turn how sick these people were!

    - I did notice the Smiths in the Strip club though.

  • It was wonderful to see Luke Skywalker's mom strip to "How Soon Is Now?" Funny, I've had so many table dances to that same song over the years. Now I know I am not alone.

  • Why is it always How Soon is Now? It is wonderful to have Moz/Smiths in the soudtrack of a film, but HSIN has been played in The Craft and The Wedding Singer that I can remember. With such a rich back catalogue why can't they use any other song? I can think of many that would be great in film.
