I think this comment, puts the nail in the coffin, the stake in the heart, of any and all rumors and talk of a Smiths reuninion.
The discussion of such should never be raised again.

And, yes, I'm versed in Elvis history and am well aware that the "Comeback Special" was an unofficial title coined by fans and the press as the years passed. Be that as it may, the use of a similar sign seems to be a too obvious symbol of career resuscitation. If it was not truly a "come back" per se, why not a new clutch of interesting and provocative backdrops? Sadly, it seems yet another symptom of the "dumbing down" Morrissey has had to do to bring the "just browsing" crowd back.

he says NME's response to moz's union flag toting was
'anguished yet gleeful' and 'cod-outraged but secretly delighted'.
so they weren't really outraged, they were 'secretly delighted' - what about? moz's potential downfall, or was it the flag-waving that got them off? judging by the same journalists' adoption of oasis a couple of years later, it was the latter.
i think maconie's trying to belittle his defamation of the singer (who kept him in work for the best part of ten years). or perhaps, back then, he was only obeying orders...
NME's 'outrage' was a joke, not to be taken seriously. coming from a man who's spent his 30s taking a few pounds to offer his insight into anything you want on cheap 'what-we-did-in-1991' tv, he's probably right.
thanks for transcribing the interview - but fuck off maconie. and what's morrissey doing talking to him? last year moz said he could now talk to NME because the types who worked on the 'smelly old' NME had now departed.
i guess they all kept each other's numbers, just in case...

The purge you mention did actually happen, methadone, when the weekly music press upped and died. Certain careers did not recover.
And yes, I do know that a periodical calling itself the NME does still exist, but it's not at all the same proposition. Today's glossy (and stapled, dammit - that's where the rot set it) version is really just an ad rag.
In the old days, the editorial line used to be determined by venom (very occasionally enthusiasm, but mainly venom). Now payola is the only thing that counts. The current editorial staff couldn't pull off a 'Flying the Flag...' stunt even if they wanted to - they don't have that sort of power.
Whether you think this is something to be regretted or not is really up to you. I have my own opinion, of course... but, well, forget it. You have to understand that I used to live for Wednesday mornings.
Dagenham Dave: Well, you've just made me go back and listen to it. I did laugh, and that kiss-off line is engagingly hopeless, but you're not gonna convince me that it's a major addition to the canon. And besides, I was pilloried mercilessly at school for defending its merits and these things leave their scars.
BTW, you were not to know but please don't 'rightly christian' me. I'm a good Jewish girl and proud of it. x
