On the Q&A section of Belle and Sebastian's website someone has issued a question asking Stuart (the singer) what his top ten Smiths songs are, and if they've ever covered them live. The Text is as follows-

From: emma
Q.Top ten Smiths songs? Ever cover them live? I need something new to read, fic or non. Any suggestions? By the way, I think you are brilliant. I hope life brings you much happiness.

A. you've got everything now william jeanne bigmouth well I wonder reel around the fountain half a person frankly mister shankly please please please still ill some girls are bigger

we've done 'reel around the fountain'. first song we ever covered. we've dipped into the boy with the thorn, mostly cos it's the one that stevie can stand. did it in spain cos moz didn't show.

(here is a link to the page, you may need to scroll down a bit)

Thought people may find this interesting- his choices are pretty good, and he seems to favour the earlier stuff (I think elsewhere on the site he lists the first Smiths albums as one of his all-time favourites). Also good to see the under-rated 'Well I Wonder' get a mention!

  • ...is actually quite excellent.

Well worth downloading if you can find it.

  • B&S are the only great band that has arrived in the last ten years.

No wonder Stuart likes The Smiths and always mentions Morrissey and The Smiths as one of his greatest influences.

    Viva Bel&Seb!!!

  • well, there is one absolutely hilarious cover bellseb did years ago. they took someone from the audience to help stuart with the lyrics (after asking what cover they would prefer) and he did his job so great that stuart handed his mic over to him.
grab it if you can, it's real fun. awesome audience as well. thumbs up to that performance!

  • Anyone have their covers of Reel Around the Fountain and/or The Boy w/ the Thorn in His Side that they feel like sharing? I'd certainly love to hear them.
