Peter Hook Q&A: An Online Exclusive - Filter

Tell me about Freebass. You started a band with Mani from the Stone Roses, Andy Rourke of the Smiths and yourself. Three bass players. Is this just going to be a recording project or will it be live as well?

It’s going to be a live as well. The interesting thing about Freebass is that Mani and I are very much live-based. It seems obvious really that we’d get together. Whether that bodes trouble or not, I don’t know. Whether or not bass players have a different mindset than the other members of groups. I don’t know. We’ll have to find out. It was just one drunken night and I floated the idea. And basically what gave me the most impetus was that everyone laughed! Three bass players on an album! Everyone absolutely pissed themselves. (laughs)

Where are you with that? When will we hear it?
We have about 19 ideas. Twelve of them are ready for vocals. We’ve had a problem finding a vocalist. We have not been lucky yet to find the one. I think the problem is that the three of us have such a pedigree of vocalist, that if we come out with someone that’s not good we’ll obviously be slated! You’ve got Ian Brown, bloody Bobby Gillespie, Ian Curtis, Bernard (Sumner) and Morrissey. Those are big shoes to fill, especially collectively...

  • My wife works in Manchester for a leading residential apartment provider. Her office is a stones' throw from Andy's apartment.
She introduced herself to Andy and secured an autograph for me (wasted on her really as she likes duran and phil collins).
Then a few days later she nearly choked on a murray mint when Andy, mani and Hooky walked past. Running out of the office screaming Andy!!!
mani said- i think this lady wants you Andy, to which Andy said "err- her husband is a Smiths saddo" (- a bit of self depreciation, he was joking).
My wife asked for their autographs- Mani was lovely, Hooky was a bit arsey but signed it " you wanker" - he later apologised when my wife said that i had Joy division and new order boxsets- i took it a bit of fun!
I had though it was something to do with the charity concert in the new year.

  • Or is it just a gimmick?

I can's see how three bass players can make anything worth listening to.

  • there was another band already named Freebass. can't they come up with their own name? granted, the Freebass of 1997 (featuring Roger Taylor, original drummer for Duran Duran, and Mark Anthony of Fuzzbox) that put out a single, "Love is Like Oxygen." but they never got a recording contract.

it's gonna be pretty boring if it's just 3 bass players tho.

...is evil something you ARE, or something you DO?
  • I bet this is brilliant sounding these are 3 of the best bass players ever and the bass is the most underated rock instrument, but New Order/Joy Division would not be musical with out the hooky bass grooves. The Smiths would not have been nearly as listenable, and the roses wouldn't have been 1/2 as dreamy with out the grooves that Mani laid down. What they need though is to add Jah Wobble. Then they'd really have something. and hell yeah if ya need a vocalist, how do i apply?

  • Andy is playing guitar with Freebass, not bass.

    Interesting...
