Smiths Rarities Album on the Way - albumvote.co.uk

Former band members of The Smiths may hand over rare tracks for new compilation album. Morrissey, Marr and Co have previously refused to hand over the tracks to Warner Bros because of them releasing compilations albums without their approval. However, Planet Sound reports that Rhino Records, who own the US publishing rights, are in talks with the band over releasing an album later this year.

  • if they are released - where will Morrissey's royalties go.... after his statement of last year we can hardly expect him to release stuff to line someone elses pockets?

as much as I would love to hear it all - sometimes stuff is unreleased for a reason.....lord help us if it all turns out to be a turgid mess

  • Wonder what will be on it?

'I Want A Boyfriend For My Birthday' definitely exists, and we know that Mike Joyce has a recording of 'A Matter Of Opinion'. Surely those two would go on it. The 'punk' version of 'Bengali In Platforms' recorded after Johnny had quit almost certainly exists, but whether Morrissey would want to go through all the carry on surrounding that track again is another thing.

I hope it's not just going to be a lot of instrumental faffing around. We all know that Morrissey wasn't overly keen on hanging around the recording studio, and would often do the vocals in just one or two takes, so that doesn't really bode well for a lot of alternative lyrics etc.

Still, given that we've had zero Smiths product since 1987, ANYTHING will be warmly received.

  • What band? Heaven's sake! It's Mike Joyce handing them the stuff! He can't do that. Argh!

  • I hope it's not just "Troy Tate"-sessions + instrumentals

  • I've thought of a few other tracks that may well be included.

There's the alternative take of 'There Is A Light....' that Naomi mentions elsewhere here.
Then there's the studio version of 'This Night Has Opened My Eyes' produced by John Porter, that surely exists in some form or other.

Speaking of John Porter, there are also his original mixes of 'Ask' and 'Golden Lights' which Morrissey and Stephen Street alledgedly tampered with/sabotaged. The Porter mix of GL is supposed to be vastly superior to what was released.

There's 'Needle In A Haystack', the Northern Soul track, that The Smiths used to cover in their earliest days(I can't remember who recorded the original, it may have been Martha& The Vandellas). It may exist on some old rehearsal tapes.

There are some of the Troy Tate versions of the first album, but not too many of those tracks were radically different from what was released.

There's the 'live' takes of 'Unloveable'. The Smiths clearly intended to include 'Unloveable' in their live routine as they frequently soundchecked it(with vocals) on their 1985 Scottish tour. A bootleg CD called 'Unloveable' has two versions from the soundcheck at the Eden Court at Inverness.

There's still some Radio Sessions that remain unreleased, including 'Miserable Lie' from the 1983 Peel session, and 'William...' and 'How Soon Is Now' from the 1984 Peel session. There must also, one would imagine, be studio versions of 'Half A Person' and 'Sweet And Tender Hooligan' as the only versions that exist on vinyl/CD are radio session versions.

And then of course there's the godawful Francois Kevorkian mixes of 'This Charming Man'(please, God, NO!!!), or the excruciating Euro-Megamixes(I'd rather smash my teeth in with a hammer than suffer them again).

I get the feeling we could be in for a pretty disappointing package(b-sides and instrumentals). I reckon the fans could come up with a better compilation.

    Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

  • I reckon this will be a similar beast the godawful "Garage Flower" compilation from the Stone Roses that was put out by their first record company after they split. It was a record of about 17 of their tracks, split between their old "goth" numbers and early workings of some of their classics such as I wanna be adored and waterfall. As the record company (Silvertone/Zomba I think) owned the taoes they put it out without the bands permission so if Joyce has copies of these "rare" out-takes/studio doodlings etc he doesn't have to ask Morrissey/Marr's permission.... I think....

Ps. and please, all the original albums in 5.1, thank you.

  • As much as all us diehards would like to see some incredibly obscure homemade cassette recordings on a rarities compilation, I suspect that there wouldn't be anything too bootleggy on it.
Rather I think it would include mostly non-album b-sides "Work Is a 4 Letter Word", "I Keep Mine Hidden", "What's The World", "Jeane", "Wonderful Woman", non-Peel versions of songs on Hatful, the live tracks off TJIFA, etc. Mostly ebay stuff that's already released but a pain to find.
If we're lucky, we might get the Troy Tate sessions and if we're extremely lucky, maybe, just maybe, we'll get the unreleased Peel sessions.
My Early Burglary Years was Morrissey's idea of a rarities compilation so I suspect that a Smiths rarity album would be along those lines.
Would I like to hear some lost songs or aborted sessions no matter how scratchy they might be? Yes. But I would still be very very happy to have all of the rare non-bootleg stuff cleaned up, remastered and on one disc.
