It's (really) old news now, but a website for a famous NYC restaurant known for desserts (featured in the movie Serendipity with John Cusak and Kate Beckinsale) has a "Latest Gossip" scroll found here that includes an entry for May 11th, 2004 describing Morrissey's visit for a Strawberry Fields Forever Sundae.

Latest Gossip:

May 11th, 2004

Morrissey, the former front man for The Smiths, was seen with an entourage at Serendipity 3 having a Strawberry Fields Forever Sundae this Mother's Day, before his flight to London for a concert. He skipped the hour wait by having his assistant identify him to the host, after which the reclusive rocker wearing a Morrissey t-shirt and enormous sunglasses walked in covering his face from oblivious patrons.

"How to turn a 34 year old man in to a teenager…

I just met Morrissey on the street near my office.

Just to put this into context, I have idled away many an hour thinking of all the erudite, thoughtfull and clever things I might say to Morrissey should I ever meet him.

Over the last 20 years, I have changed the list of things I might want to ask him about - the subjects and issues and questions I have in mind mind to ask Morrissey, should I ever meet him, are entirely appropriate for a man of 34 years, with a wife, child and thriving digital media agency.

I was just about able to shake his hand and mutter something completely inane.
Oh, and showed him that I was wearing a Morrissey t-shirt (which I chose to wear this morning because I saw his new video last night).
    That’s it - “hello… muttur mutter… - look at my t-shirt.”

He looked at it and said (in an indulgent way),
“A man of your age. You should be ashamed.”

    I hang my head."

  • Didn't Andy eat at Serendipity? That was a favorite place of his when he was still a commercial artist in the 50s.
    Ah trivia.

  • everyday is like sundae?

btw, isn't Serendipity famous for those huge hot chocolate drinks the size of one's head? with a huge blob of whipping cream on top? or is that some other NYC cafe?

...is evil something you ARE, or something you DO?
  • Morrissey has always worn Smiths or Moz-solo t-shirts, but nobody's ever really commented on it.

I can't think of another rock star who's unashamedly worn his own merch over the years.

Yet somehow, it never comes across as crass commercialism.
