While reading an interview with Xiu Xiu on Pitchfork, I came across this question.

Pitchfork: Do you ever feel like Morrissey?

Xiu Xiu: I feel like a figurine of a figurine of Morrissey. Did you know that Morrissey calls Prince "Ponce?" I wonder if they know each other or if it's like dirty looks at Spago.

  • Extrapolating from that, there's a busy celebration of the 100th anniversary of Samuel Beckett's birth in Dublin underway over the next few weeks. He's had a phenomenal influence on art, society, philosophy, and it strikes me that there's some resemblance between his work, even aspects of his public persona, and Morrissey.

"Samuel Barclay Beckett (April 13, 1906–December 22, 1989) was an Irish playwright, novelist and poet. Beckett's work is stark, fundamentally minimalist, and deeply pessimistic about human nature and the human condition, although the pessimism is mitigated by a great and often wicked sense of humor. His later work explores his themes in an increasingly cryptic and attenuated style. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969 and elected Saoi of Aosdána in 1984.
