Good Luck, Goodbye writes:
The Scottish newspaper The Daily Record has made it's own chart of music's worst lyrics, to coincide with VH1's Best Lyrics poll.

Lyrics from Morrissey's song King Leer were included:

Your boyfriend he,
Went down on one knee.
Well could it be,
He's only got one knee?

  • I remember liking the overall sound of King Leer, but that line did stand out as akward.

  • when Morrissey toured for Kill Uncle, those live performances were billion times better than the studio version. But lyrically yes it a bit weak

  • This is a fantastic lyric, hilarious. In what way is it bad? It's a neat, tight rhyme and an amusing and vivid image. I remember laughing out loud when I first heard it.

I'm genuinely baffled that someone would be incapable of 'getting' it.

  • from the title on down.

'Kill Uncle' is arguably Morrissey's best album lyrically- he's never been as witty, charming, fey and fun as he is on that record.

his worst song, lyric and tune, is "Noise Is The Best Revenge".

  • I have always believed that in the words of that very song, there's a lot of sarcasm and mistery: The boyfriend went down in one knee, but, what for?, is he faking a scene to the protagonist?, Is there a good reason, or a need for do that?, just follow the song... but that's Morrissey, making fun with his black humour, very brilliant... of course, the most part of the trash-pop-influenced people, just don't have the mind open enought to value that talent. It's part of the history of our frankly and deep poet.
Kill Uncle is a work of art, one of the most important albums in pop music.

  • to see people stick up for this song.

Actually it's not one of my favourite Moz tracks, but the simple pun made it the perfect user name.

I don't know why a certain segment cannot accept Morrissey's sometimes very blunt word play or sillyisms. He grew up watching Carry On and Benny Hill!

    All or nothing, baby.

  • Personally, I adore King Leer, but my point is that most of the genuinely bad lyrics around are also pretty forgettable. That these - Morrissey's included - stuck in people's minds, is a sort of perverse tribute to their authors. Even if the compilers of the poll didn't quite get the joke in some cases.

  • The whole thing, the list and the songs chosen, is all very slapdash. It's one of the most senseless lists ever!

Queen have written far stupider lyrics than the one chosen. The whole of 'Bohemian Crapsody' for a start.
The line from 'Ebony & Ivory' isn't techically all that bad...the whole song though, now that's another matter. Repugnant mawkish twaddle.
And who, under 30 and not British, has heard of their #1 choice? B.A. Robertson? A VERY minor artist to say the least.

I don't understand Morrissey's inclusion at all. The line is intentionally cloying, especially when put in context with the references to Tizer and a homeless chihuahua. The song is not meant to be taken literally. It's not a follow up to 'Suffer Little Children' for goodness sake.

Get a sense of humour you useless hack bastards!!!

  • It's funny that as Moz fans we bash this album all the time. Not everyone but the majority of folks here do. But when some newspaper trashes it we all get our panties in a twist and defend it as if it were our own flesh and blood.

I think it shows that Kill Uncle isn't a bad record. It's, to most fans, sub-par for Morrissey. When you start comparing it to the rubbish on that list it shows what gem it really is.

  • It's lithe, weird, dark, ambivalent, elegant, deeply ambiguous, funny and all too ephemeral.

It has never deserved to be his most maligned album.
