In addition to entering at #17 in the UK singles chart this week, "In The Future When All's Well" enters at #1 in the Top 30 Independent Label Singles.

  • Never heard of this chart. What is it the 500th chart out there? We'll I'm sure Moz will take it anyway.

  • I'm not going to do the whole "if you're not a fan why do you even come here?" song and dance, because I assume there's some kernal of love you have (or once had) for Moz, otherwise you wouldn't even know about this place.

My question is, if you tend to belittle or outright bash Morrissey's achievements (or lack of, in your eyes), what exactly would be your ideal situation? In terms of charts, sales, image, etc. If you're going to be negative, at least be articulate about it.

And no sarcasm in these answers, por favor.

  • I know it's a little late to be discussing this, but I think it's a very interesting song. The lyrics are piquant, and the tune is delightful. The vocals are divine. It sounds like "This Charming Man" all grown up, in so many ways.

It speaks volumes about where Morrissey's head is at nowadays. Perhaps he needs to sow some wild oats (which he seems to be doing anyway).

  • Morrissey's single charting the UK Indie chart is significant, in that it does give some insight to how Morrissey is now viewed in the music marketplace.

I can't say much about the UK Indie chart, but my experience as a US fan from way back, if I wanted to see how a Morrissey single was doing, I would most likely find him in the Billboard Modern Rock chart. The Modern Rock chart was created for artists who for the most part, would be considered "alternative" and generally not be heard on mainstream radio. The Modern Rock chart was based on sales as well as airplay from thousands of college radio and alternative radio stations. Morrissey's actually charted well in those days.

Then a strange phenomenon occurred in the mid-ninties; artists like Green Day, U2, and Nirvana who had a strong listening audience in the Modern Rock charts were suddenly having their songs being picked up by mainstream radio stations. Also, alternative radio stations started to dwindle in number, and many were forced to change music format purely for economic reasons. So, the Billboard Modern Rock charts needed to be redefined. How it is presently defined remains unclear to me. College radio stations no longer factor in with the Modern Rock charts anymore, for they were given their own chart status in the late 90s. Morrissey, it seemed was pushed out of this newly-defined Modern Rock chart.

So, that brings us to today. Because of his "alternative" legacy and lack of crossover appeal to mainstream radio, he is now officially the Independent Label artist. We know Attack is owned by Sanctuary and some might consider Attack Records a "vanity" label given to Morrissey, but I'm not sure whether the music industry makes that much of a distinction regarding Indie labels and whether the label itself is responsible for its own record distribution or the parent label does it for them.

So, there you go. Morrissey presently is considered an Indie artist. All hail the Indie god!
