On Friday 8th February's episode of the British soap opera Emmerdale, The Smiths were mentioned.

It was in a scene involving a teenage girl (Victoria), a boy she fancies whose name escapes me, and Victoria's brother (kind of) Daz.

*********

DAZ: Don't listen to Victoria, she has Girls Aloud on her iPod!

VICTORIA: Don't listen to him! So what other music do you like?

BOY: Well, I like the Killers, Foo Fighters, and some older stuff too - have you heard of The Smiths?

VICTORIA: Yeah, I love them! We should go and see them sometime!

DAZ and the BOY looked amused.

VICTORIA: What's so funny!?

DAZ: They split up about 20 years ago!

Always nice to hear The Smiths and Morrissey mentioned when you least expect it.

By the way, for viewers in the UK with ITV2, the Emmerdale omnibus will I'm quite sure be on at some point this week, so maybe you can catch the Smiths mention again!

  • Such a treat to hear Moz/The Smiths mentioned in such a surprising context:)

  • "Hotton? Is that not the place near Emmerdale Farm where everyone goes for big nights out?"

"Morrissey said he had become obsessed with Hotton yet could not find it on the map. He mentioned to Russel Brand he only watches Emmerdale and made a ref to some of the shows characters during the Bridlington Spa show in September 2004!!"

I'm sure he'll be pleased/intrigued to be namechecked.

  • I'd like to know if he/they have ever been mentioned on Coronation Street...they mention other bands sometimes...Oasis in the last couple of weeks...or given his obsessive love in the past for Corrors has he ever asked/been asked to make a brief appearance...not as himself but just a punter in Rovers or someone on the street....I would think this would give him pleasure...

  • I too saw this. It made me giggle for a little while. However, I think television producers try too hard to make characters more life like.
