As posted by user Danny in the forums (original post), according to this article Merck Mercuriadis is no longer managing Morrissey:

IE Signs Morrissey For Management - Billboard.com
May 27, 2008 - Global

By Lars Brandle, London

Morrissey has joined ie:music, the British management firm which guides the career of Robbie Williams.

The former Smiths singer will now be managed on a global basis by Josie Cliff, who heads-up the firm's U.S. division ie:west, and by ie's founders Tim Clark and David Enthoven.

The news, confirmed in a two-sentence press release issued today, confirms the British singer's split with manager Merck Mercuriadis, the former CEO of now-defunct Sanctuary U.S.

Founded in 1992 by Clark and Enthoven, ie:music represents a small roster of artists, including Sia, Craig Armstrong, Passenger, Archive and the Asteroids Galaxy Tour.

  • Merck's been very polite and helpful though. Is that why it didn't work out? ;)

  • I bet Moz was pissed that Merck was posting on "So-Low" and gave him the sack. Morrissey has done worse things for lesser offenses.

  • Reading a post by 'Danny' on the forum here brought some clarity, considering that the pairing of Merck and Morrissey accomplished a lot and they worked harmoniously together for the past four years or so -

"Not really that strange. If you think about it Merck is a very wealthy and powerful man who is used to heading up large companies. At Sanctuary he had very little day to day dealings with Morrissey. When Sanctuary bust he probably felt obliged to continue managing Morrissey as the bust was partly his fault. His tenure as manager was probably only until they could find someone more suitable."

  • I hope that Morrissey sacking Merck has more to do with the defunct Sanctuary records and not that Moz was pissed about Merck directly communicating with us.

    Thanks Merck.

  • Fare thee well in your future endeavors and thanks for holding out solidly with our Moz from (record) deal to no-deal to deal again during a crazy time in the music industry (with Moz's fabulous Greatest Hits international tour and an album with Lee Visconti to boot! That's pretty impressive). Your integrity and commitment is to be admired.

Welcome, Ms. Cliff. We look forward to your stewardship and please be in contact with us at Moz-solo!

I hope that it was an amicable split that it was based on both sides going on to different things.

Josie, if you're reading, once in a while come here to post on Morrissey's behalf, por favor.

  • While I can't give details I will say that this is a very smart move. Finally, Moz has realised his manager is a complete idiot. And a hugely unprofessional one at that. This is a relief. Merck was a disaster.

  • Perhaps it was Merck's candor on this site (which was spamodically insightful)that may have contributed to the separation. More likely, Moz would experience greater exposure with IE:Music.

Moz: Please wake up! You plain jane back-up band has gone oh so stale. You need to be challenged...take up with some *real* song writers and sack the line-up.

  • Morrissey's new management company also manage Robbie Williams. And this chick heads their US division.
Just a short question: how many records has Robbie Williams sold in the US? Not many & it hasn't been through the want of trying.
Let's hope they can do better with Moz.
So I don't have to go on Google, anyone know who else they manage?

  • I hope the parting was amicable.

Certainly Merck was very good at keeping us informed and it was certainly good to have such high level recognition of the site and it's members, though certainly also his candour was not always the most professional. Perhaps he was suckered in by our constant, never ending speculation of every single word or gesture which could be interpreted as out of turn!

Anyway, I am sure it was purely for business reasons and I look forward to an even more driven and successful career for Morrissey... He isn't just out there for our benefit so it'd be good to see him getting more exposure and making more money... then he can share it with his loyal audience!

  • Merck, it should be remembered, was only made M's manager after Jed Weitzman was fired in early 2007. Merck was always there but not the day-to-day manager that Jed was from 2004-06. It always looked like Merck was a temporary solution: going from head of a record company to manager of M is not a good career move. Good luck to Merck!
