Drummer speaks out as he stands for parliament

Excerpt:

Blur drummer and Labour parliamentary candidate Dave Rowntree has criticised Conservative leader David Cameron over his apparent love for The Smiths.

Rowntree, who is standing as a candidate for Labour in the Cities of London and Westminster in the forthcoming general election, questioned Cameron's motives for wanting to be photographed outside The Smiths' spiritual home of Salford Lads Club in Manchester in 2008.

"He's a Smiths tourist, "Rowntree told the Guardian. "Real Smiths fans dress a certain kind of way, and they have a certain kind of haircut, and they wear certain kinds of T-shirts. But what they probably don't do is have their picture taken outside the Salford Lads Club."

Comical. A "real Smiths fan" doesn't wear a certain kind of haircut or clothing. That would be completely opposite of everything the Smiths represented.

How do you go from an empire ruling almost the entire known world at one time or another to arguing about what "real" smiths fans do or dont do. And by the way I think the only Smiths fans that dont take that picture are the ones that live in Ordsall, Salford and pass it daily.

Your right most of it is trivial. And people do seem to lap it up. But what this proves is that politicians think we are idiots, and when we do lap it up, we are being idiots. So this is now my 3rd comment on this subject. Does that constitute lapping? But all these P.R. stunts do for me is make me dislike and distrust politicians all the more. So, no, I dont consider myself an idiot. And you realizing how trivial this is keeps you out of that column as well.

  • I would get my pic taken in front of Salford Lads Club every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'll get there one of these days, and I won't hesitate to snap the pic. And I'll still be a "real" Smiths and Moz fan.
