Hi. I run a film blog based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I recently interviewed Adele Bethel from Sons and Daughters and during our chat she mentioned Morrissey, the films he inspired her to watch and her favourite of those. I thought it might be of interest to your readers.

An Interview with Adele Bethel - Film2010

Excerpt:

We are both fans of Morrissey (Sons and Daughters supported him in 2006) and he is an artist who also has a huge love of cinema. He never misses an opportunity to mention some of the films he loves in interviews or in lyrics. "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning", "A Taste of Honey" and "Billy Liar" all being examples. Which of the Morrissey approved films is your favourite and what is it that you enjoy about it?

"I love the fact Morrissey turned me on to so much cinema. I have to say that as much as I love all of the above, I think ‘The Leather Boys’ might be the one I like the most at this point. I managed to get it a couple of years ago on DVD and watched it every day for an entire tour. Scott from the band loved it too so we would go and find greasy spoon cafes and drink tea in our biker jackets and pretend we were in the movie! Sad."

Finally Adele what music would you have playing over the opening and closing credits of the "Adele Bethel Story" movie?
"Well, as unlikely a prospect of such a film being made (thanks Paul, you’re very sweet) I’d have “Sunday Girl” by Blondie to open and “Paint a Vulgar Picture” by The Smiths to end."

  • Ahoy. I run the blog where the interview can be found. There is also an interview with Duglas T Stewart from the BMX Bandits up there and real film reviewer Kim Newman (who doesn't agree with us about The Smiths!). It would really help me out if readers of morrissey-solo would visit the blog and register as followers...your thoughts on the films being reviewed and on the interviews would be gratefully received. It's a one man show and I'm, clearly, not a trained journalist but I hope you like what I've done. There is a clear Moz influence on things as I'm a huge fan! Cheers.

I have to agree with them- 'The Leather Boys' is a stunning film. And it of course features in the 'Girlfriend In a Coma' video. Fantastic.

I think my personal favourite would be "The L-Shaped Room". But, having said that, you could watch any of these Moz "approved" films and enjoy them...they are all bona fide classics but I'm not sure that I would have found them without Morrissey. Now go and register as a follower on the blog!

  • I stumbled across this film on telly some time back, and could tell at once it was a unique period classic.

I wonder if Morrissey likes 'Beat Girl?'
