    lighten up, morrissey!
  • It's a good cover version, as far as they go.

But if Placebo are peddling it as 'new', then please...

  • Why hasn't anyone shot Brian Molko yet in the interests of good music?

Let me start off by saying Im not a huge fan of Plecebo, but much like Ben Gibbered and Death Cab fo Cutie, I think there best work is reinterpreting already great songs. They do an excellent versions of "where is my mind" by the Pixies, "I feel you" by Depeche Mode and thier version of Kate Bushes "running up that hill" rivals the original. No actually I think I like it more. Most of there original material tends to sound to fast and poppy for me. I think if they stuck to slower darker and colder songs they would would be great. Well needless to say I was excited when I heard they did "Bigmouth". I had never heard thier version. It is always exciting to me when I read interviews or hear covers (even though almost all are terrible) that let the world know how amazing , important , and influential Moz/The Smiths are to modern music. I just finished listening to the Plecebo cover and although I am not closed minded and will give it another couple listens the prospects of it growing on me are pretty bleak. I really think that his voice is a very poor fit (but so is anyone elses) for the song. I really think they could have done something special with a slower paced song where they could have been more emotive. "Asleep" , "Well I wonder" or perhaps "Never had no one ever" would have been ideal in my opinion. One parting comment, I understand that any band covering The Smiths or Morrissey is simply paying homage to greatness and isnt shooting to improve upon anything, but please please please leave "a light that never goes out" alone! Nothing anyone ever does can do anything but crap on the most beautifull song ever written. (espanol version aside of course)

  • You should note this Covers release was not done in consultation with or approved by PLACEBO. It was done by EMI, their previous record label.
This CD was initially a second disc on limited pressings of "Sleeping with Ghosts".
Although confusingly Amazon are showing Covers as on the Virgin label.
