Winners of the 55th Ivor Novello Awards

Johnny Marr wins Ivor Novello gong
Johnny Marr, Bat For Lashes star Natasha Khan and Paolo Nutini are celebrating after winning gongs at the Ivor Novello Awards.

Former Smiths guitarists Johnny - who has formed collaborations with Billy Bragg, the Pet Shop Boys and Bryan Ferry as well as being associated with Modest Mouse, Electronic and The Cribs - was awarded the inspiration prize, while Paolo won the album award and Natasha's Bat For Lashes hit Daniel won best contemporary song.

Hugged by Noel Gallagher as he walked to the stage to pick up his gong, Johnny told the audience: "I always thought that the greatest thing you can achieve as a musician is to be called an inspiration - aside from a big house in Sunningdale obviously."

Remember when Morrissey won, and thanked Johnny? YouTube video of acceptance

  • JM looks soooo sweet. This award is very much deserved.

Can't say the same for Lily Allen, but she has her admirers (deluded tho they be)

  • I can't think of a more apt award to give John Marr of Wythenshaw.
Congratulations Johnny, not that you'll ever read this obviously, but it's the thought that counts.

  • . . . . for your talent, our beloved Morrissey and all you new and exciting work.

Went to a Cribs concert at the end of last year after Morrissey's Liverpool gig, I went to hear you play not so much to see The Cribs but you are so brilliant and so modest, thank you for your inspiration and the lovely feeling at your Cribs concerts, everyone was so elated and deliriously happy to see you, dancing room only to the back of the hall through the exit doors!!!

    Superb.

Even though Johnny didn't mention Morrissey which might have seemed like a tritely-copied gesture to some if he had, perhaps they share a secret language in which placenames convey a special message? Sunningdale anyone?!

  • Even though this is a pretty meaningless award at least Johnny has a past worth celebrating. He, along with Morrissey were The Smiths. His music brought Morrissey’s words to new heights.
Unfortunately it didn’t last and we were left interchangeable pointless dredge conjured up by the likes of Boz, Alain, and Jesse. All of who contribute about the same amount of listenable tunes as crap and the majority on here who rant and rave at one being preferable likely would not be able to tell their compositions apart w/o knowing who wrote them. Basically they all can now and then achieve competence but largely their music never heightens Morrissey’s words as Johnny did.

Johnny has not achieved anything of note since The Smiths it is true but at least he was a part of a few years of brilliance which the most, including Morrissey’s rotating cast of composers, never has.

  • I don't want to slag off Mr Marr, but this award really should have gone to Alain Whyte. Alain is much more respected in the music business than Marr will ever be, and his tunes will be remembered long after Johnny Marr is well and truly forgotten.
