The Smiths

Probably the ultimate cult band, The Smiths have always inspired devotion and derision in equal measure. To the fans, Morrissey will always be the eloquent, fascinating poet genius; to others (their mothers) he's a preening, whining fool. It's best summed up by your attitude to the song Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now. If you're a fan, it's a throwaway ditty that's unlikely to be a favourite. If you're a normal, it encapsulates everything you can't bear.

  • This person knows not of what they speak. I've never considered The Smiths to be a cult band. They are respected by most and loved by many. People who were around when the Smiths were together don't typically view them as some odd-ball taste to be acquired. Sure, some people dislike them or think of them as depressing, but never as a cult group. In fact, unlike Marmite, I think most people agree that The Smiths were an excellent band, even if they weren't your taste in music.

I would argue that solo Morrissey is more akin to a cult. The number of his followers is smaller, yet they (we) are devoted in a cult-like manner.
