James Dean lucky pocket watch goes under the gavel - Professional Jeweller

Excerpt:

...Fame Bureau representative James Wilkinson said there has been a lot of interest in the item. He added: “The estimate is for £30,000 to £35,000, but we are hoping it will be achieving more than this.”

This is not the first time there has been an attempt to sell the watch. In 2008, the watch was supposed to be sold by auction house Heritage, but after details were leaked that Morrissey’s manager had bought it for as a gift for Morrissey, the sale fell through.

The watch presently belongs to a private owner who chooses not to be named.

  • I was really disappointed to hear the news. It would have been nice to know Jimmy's watch was in good hands. Now it will be sold over and over to the highest bidder because it's all about money and not the fact that it once belonged to such a wonderful soul.

As I said in the forum: It should naturally go to Marcus or Joan (Jimmy's cousins)and it should stay in their possession or in the museum in Fairmount...

        Hi Kate -

Well, it's a pocket watch, and it's got significant meaning because it was actually the pocket watch he wore in East of Eden. It was a first "major purchase" and he had his name engraved on the watch as well. It meant a hell of a lot to James Dean, and it just makes me sick to see some of his personal items being autioned off when they should be in the museum in Fairmount - tucked away safely...but then a lot of his things were sold that I thought would never, EVER leave Fairmount...so whatever.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound so bitter, but the whole thing leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. It's not about James Dean anymore. The next owner will just aution it off again for more money.

Sadly, it's the way of the world and there's nothing to be done. Except to accept it and move on.

  • Why did the sale of the watch fall through when the details of Morrissey's 'then manager' buying him the watch, fall through?

Is giving presents on Morrissey's 'No, and Stop Trying to Buy My Conversation and Signature' list?

There have been a few stories like this. Remember the story regarding Julia Riley buying Morrissey a first edition Oscar Wilde book and him sending it back?

    He's very careful, indeed!

When 'Morrissey didn't buy a watch' is considered a newsworthy story, you know we're beginning to struggle!

  • Here's another one and it's a fact.

Morrissey did NOT accept millions and millions of dollars to sing, and perform with Andy and Mike Joyce aka Mike Gross. It's a fact and that fact never changes.
