every time I hear someone cover a smiths or moz song it just sounds wrong, wrong, wrong. Like say you buy a porche super car pulled apart then have it put back together by your local handyman.

  • As I've mentioned with every Smiths or Morrissey cover posted on this site: just because you may be able to figure out the chord progression and memorize the lyrics - unless you are doing something to spectacularly alter or revitalize something that was originally sub-par, please leave the original version alone.

I think that Morrissey has done the opposite in his career (as should every aspiring artist): take a rather obscure, forgotten song and make it into a piece of art... something enjoyable. I think that sometimes we all hear a song and think "if I had produced this, I would have done something different - something better" and Morrissey has demonstrated this with great results (East West, That's Entertainment, Skin Storm, Golden Lights, etc.) - and poor results (Drive-in Saturday, albeit live; Moon Over Kentucky, and so-on).

I'm not really picky over the news items on this site - but seriously... I am going to cover "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" with flatulent armpit sounds and a voicebox - but wait - I'll make it just a bit better by producing a shit video of a baby's hand getting slapped while trying to flick off a light switch... you know, in case you're deaf and can't audibly enjoy my artistic interpretation. ...can't wait to see it posted here!

  • I like the video, and the sweet instrumentation almost manages to distract from the hamfisted lyrics.

The responses on here are no great surprise. How dare anyone have the audacity to cover our wonderful man's genius etc.

But flattering covers are really the only output we have to look forward to now, don't you think?

  • There is no point covering this song, I personally feel it is a very personal song to him and doesn't apply to some shoe gazing indie nothings.
Please disagree as some twat normally will with silly american comments.

  • Wow, this was painful to watch! A horrible song in its own right, made even worse. Just when you thought you'd hit rock bottom, there's always someone out there who can take you further down.
