with news of the reissue on the Radcliffe Maconie radio show. Details were posted shortly after on true-to-you.net:

Bona Drag: 20th Anniversary vinyl and CD editions release information - true-to-you.net

Excerpt:

To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, on 27th September, EMI will release through the resurrected 1960s Major Minor label, with Morrissey's full cooperation, a remastered Special Edition of Bona Drag.

Originally released to much acclaim in October 1990, Bona Drag perfectly captures Morrissey's effortless transition in becoming a solo artist. It brings together his exceptional first seven singles, four of which went Top 10: his triumphant Top 5 debut, "Suedehead"; the anthemic, apocalyptic lament to wet seaside towns, "Everyday Is Like Sunday"; "The Last Of The Famous International Playboys"; and "Interesting Drug". The Top 20s "Ouija Board, Ouija Board", "November Spawned A Monster", and "Piccadilly Palare" and a selection of high quality b-sides from the singles complete the album.

The compilation has now been remastered and overseen by Morrissey, and is updated with the addition of six previously unreleased and much coveted songs from the era:

- "Happy Lovers At Last United"
(Outtake from "Sunday" sessions)
- "Lifeguard On Duty"
(Outtake from Viva Hate sessions)
- "Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness" (demo)
(Outtake from Viva Hate, previously covered by Sandie Shaw)
- "Oh Phoney"
(Outtake from Bona Drag sessions)
- "The Bed Took Fire" (early version of "At Amber")
- "Let The Right One Slip In" (alternate long mix)

Directing the artwork for the reissue, Morrissey has chosen to return the cover art - taken from the "November" video - back to its natural colour, so his shirt is black. In addition, he has also decided to update the back and inner artwork with a selection of favourite, hand-picked and rarely-seen photos.

The LP version will be a double heavyweight 180g vinyl, housed in a wide-spine sleeve with a pull-out poster. The CD will be housed in a gatefold, card sleeve with an eight-page booklet, which will contain the aforementioned photos.

  • Why not release an EP with the extra tracks on instead of ripping off the fans one more time by reissuing Bona Drag with some rarely seen photos? Some of these sogs will now have had up to 7 or 8 or even 9 official releases.

Or alternatively release a boxset with rarities and outtakes etc from the EMI years?

  • What I think’s really interesting about this is that this is being released on a resurrected record label, namely Major Minor. This sounds very much like when Morrissey brought back Attack and released a few records on it. So I think that Morrissey has recently signed to EMI and that the next record will be released on Major Minor, same as You Are the Quarry was released on Attack. Now, whether or not he’s been recording, I’m not sure, but at least he has a record label again.

Also, any chance that Let the Rigth One Slip in is an error and it's actually the unreleased long version of There Speaks A True Friend which is also from the Arsenal period?

  • I'd give fans better value for their money. Something that would truly wet our appetite!

Instead of re-releasing albums badged with a few extra tracks, I would release a compilation entitled "Lost" which would consist of most (if not all) unreleased songs and studio outtakes. It would also include the many internet downloads that have circulated over the years, the complete Miraval sessions, and much more -- all in CD-quality.

"Lost" would not merely be a single CD edition, but also include a bonus DVD! A DVD which comprises entirely of a concert from the excellent "Oye Esteban" tour in 2000. Don't tell me that you wouldn't get chills when you see Morrissey and the boys perform "Half a Person" on your big screen!

  • Since I'm in a cynical mood, I'll take a stab at what I feel: EMI is not "remastering" anything other than "making it louder". This probably isn't a serious remastering job. I would bet they've got the capacity to run the original recordings through a digital processor to "clean them up" or "polish" them in a very short space of time (read: BATCH CONVERT). The change is enough to make you think, "Yeah, okay, they did something there", but you won't be able to say what. Placebo effect.

I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but on a technical level they would need serious help from Stephen Street, no? I don't think Street's keen on going back in to remaster anything for him.

For those who are going to buy this, I hope I'm wrong.

  • You'd never guess that it was Morrissey who once blasted artists and record labels who engage in the "reissue, repackage" practice in the name of a making a quick buck off fans.

Morrissey has turned out to be one of the WORST offenders of all! How many career retrospective and "best-of" collections does he have to his name now? I've lost count! Many of the songs on Bona Drag have been reissued several times, as an earlier commenter noted.

He must totally regret those lines in "Paint A Vulgar Picture."

Of course, he could have said no if he wanted to.. he could've walked away.. couldn't he?

    Apparently not.

    Anonymous -- Sunday July 18 2010, @07:33PM (#354398)
  • No, literally: he's repacking a repackage.

I think that this would only be worth buying if he supplied some insight into the songs through some very good liner nots: How were these songs conceived? what did he want to say with them? what inspired them? what was the collaboration process like with the varied contributors?
