The typically snarky and less-than-favorable music site Pitchfork has given the Bona Drag 20th Anniversary Edition a quite high 9.8 out of 10.0 and their badge of "best new reissue". Read the decent review in the link below.

I'm sure it won't be long before the "typically snarky and less-than-favorable" imbeciles who frequent this site re-hash their own damning of this reissue and of Morrissey with it.

  • Not Surprising (Score:2, Informative)

First, it is an amazing collection of music.

Second, Pitchfork has always loved Morrissey:

    Years of Refusal: 8.1
    Ringleader of the Tormentors: 8.0
    Live at Earls Court: 7.8
    You Are the Quarry: 8.9

They also rated Maladjusted highly, but they've taken that pre-1999 review down.

The did give Swords and Greatest Hits a 5.0 and 6.1, respectively, however.

  • Bona Drag gets so much shit that I'm normally afraid to profess my love for it. Now, since the generally-right-but-sometimes-neo-folk-bootlicking-tastemakers have spoken, I can breathe a sigh of relief:

Bona Drag is the best thing since Viva Hate. (And would have surpassed it had Striptease been included.)

If only it had all stopped there. (Just kidding;)

  • Bona Drag has dropped like a stone out of the top 100 albums this week and no doubt straight into the 2 CDS for £2 bargain bucket - if any shops even have any copies left which seems unlikely as it looks like they didn't even order any (very wisely as it turned out). Shame - even though I hate the compilation culture of Now That's What I Call Music 4,456,031 and counting (a culture which is dying thanks to downloads) - I will always have a soft spot for Bona Drag, a great compilation of wonderful singles and B sides which represent some of Moz's best work. Can't help but agree with the comments about the importance of learning something from recent Bowie re-releases - with some creative thinking and imagination Bona Drag could have done very well; I know that is asking alot of the music industry, but if this re-release was directly supported by the man himself, why didn't he give the project a little more love and attention? One can only assume that he wanted it to drop like a stone.

  • Was reviewed the previous month then.

If they'd have stuck the Wolverhampton gig in with the Bona Drag reissue then I would have been curious. As it is I already have Bona Drag, it works over the 14 tracks and is a fine compilation.
I find the extra songs unessential as I already have them and understand why they weren't deemed worthy of release at the time.

If they do come round to doing a V&I reissue put the Boxers EP and an official DVD release of Introducing Morrissey with the Smiths songs included (I'm sure they were filmed at the time)

  • what's more incredible is that icouldve been even better and more essential.

look at the songs from that era that couldve been included:

I Know Very Well How I Got My Name
    Oh Well, I'll Never Learn
    Sister, I'm A Poet
    Will Never Marry (unedited)
    Michael's Bones
    East West
    Girl Least Likely To
    At Amber
Get Off The Stage (okay, well maybe not this one)
