The accidental DJ - by Christopher Toh, TODAYonline
Ex-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke gets his groove on

Excerpt:

- "When people interview me, they try to fish for me to say something nasty about The Smiths. But I had a good time all the time."

Yes, even the Spinal Tap moments. "I remember the first time we played a gig in New York, it was New Year's Eve, and Morrissey fell off the stage. He had to be picked up, and I think he actually cried.(Laughs) His glasses were a little bit bent out of shape, but he was okay."

  • I am sick of Andy Rourke aka Randy Pork the dork news here on Morrissey-solo!
There Andy Rourke goes again slagging Morrissey off and trying to make him out to be a wuss. Andy Rourke is the real wuss he has no guts! I hate Andy Rourke!

  • So what is new Rourke slagging Moz off again in an interview.
"I remember the first time we played a gig in New York, it was New Year's Eve, and Morrissey fell off the stage. He had to be picked up, and I think he actually cried.(Laughs) His glasses were a little bit bent out of shape, but he was okay."-Andy Rourke
Andy Rourke laughs because Morrissey cried. Andy Rourke is nasty and never shows Morrissey any respect.
Buy the way Andy Rourke's show on East Village Radio.com sucks!

  • This is what Andy Rourke had to say about being a radio DJ on XFM Manchester: "I did it for about a year. I enjoyed playing the music. As for as the talking, when the red light would come on, I would freak out. I needed a few bottles of wine to get through each program. It was a good experience but I prefer doing it live."
Andy Rourke was a radio DJ on XFM Manchester in 2006 and 2007. So why if Rourke preferred DJ'ing live did he move in 2009 to 'East Village Radio' in New York as a radio DJ? Was Manchester not good enough for Andy Rourke anymore what a fool!

  • Did Andy Rourke start DJ'ing on East Village Radio.com in 2009 or in 2010? Andy Rourke is by far the worst DJ on the whole of East Village Radio.com.

  • he actually cried. How cute that must've been!

  • Andy Rourke now lives in Brooklyn. I heard Andy Rourke lives in da hood in one of the most ghetto parts of Brooklyn!
Does anyone know yet if Andy Rourke is living illegally in Brooklyn and lied on his visa application?
Brooklyn is quite bohemian and cool these days. There are some really nice parts of Brooklyn. But I heard Andy Rourke was living in the ghetto. I guess Andy Rourke couldn't afford to live in Manhattan.

  • Hi all, Andy Rourke performed at Home Club (Singapore) this night/morning. The Smiths songs he played were: London, A Rush & A Push and the Land is Ours, This Charming Man, There is a Light That Never Goes Out and Morrissey's Suedehead. Had the immense honour of meeting him and getting him to sign my This Charming Man & Hand in Glove singles. Nice bloke. Very jet-lagged, but gracious & nice.

  • I can't go along with what SelFull says about Mike Joyce they call him Mike Gross why? What did Mike Joyce do to SelFull?
Mike Joyce is aka 'Mike Gorgeous' not Mike Gross.
Mike Joyce is one of the nicest people you could hope to meet he is very friendly and intelligent. SelFull says Mike threatened to be violent I doubt it.
Mike Joyce doesn't live in New York he has stayed true to his Mancunian roots and still lives in Manchester!
Mike Joyce is a healthy vegetarian and a family man he loves his family. Mike Joyce loves animals that is why he is a vegetarian. Mike Joyce is also a great drummer and DJ.

  • Having met both Joyce and Rourke they're both pretty down to earth, ok people...though admittedly I've met Rourke when he's got 'the beasht inside'...and then it's all true!

  • Mike Joyce is a wonderful person. It isn't Morrissey who pays for Mike's healthy vegetarian food. Mike Joyce has got an allotment and he grows his own vegetables, fruits, berries and herbs!
Mike Joyce is a family man he has a beautiful wife and children. Mike has got cats and he loves all animals so much that is why he is vegetarian.
Mike Joyce also happens to be a great drummer and DJ.

  • This is what Andy Rourke says:
"I'm loving my life (in New York City). I have a band called 'Jet Lag' (the trendy, young DJ/producer Ole Koretsky is also part of the band 'Jet Lag').
I have a radio show also called 'Jet Lag'.
I have collaborations with Junior Sanchez and he's got a band called 'Team Facelift' and I'm helping out; I also produced a band called 'The Bowery Riots'; and I did a remix for 'The Tokyo Police Club'. I'm pretty busy. A lot more busy than in Manchester. Which was the whole point. I don't even own a TV any more!

Andy Rourke goes on to say:
"I'll continue till they put me into the ground. I don't think you can retire from playing music. This is my love, this is my passion."

Andy Rourke comes across as selfish in interviews or rather self centred and very self absorbed. Andy Rourke tries to be nice in interviews but if you meet him in person you will find out the truth of just how rude, arrogant and nasty he can be and how uneducated he is.
But I guess it doesn't matter how many lives Andy Rourke ruins along the way so long as he is happy that is all that matters.

  • Junior Sanchez is a cool music producer, remixer, and DJ. What a terrible name-dropper Andy Rourke is! Why would Junior Sanchez work with an idiot loser like Andy Rourke?

  • and cry. douchebag! no wonder you got jammed out in the smiths break up. p.s. you had some killer basslines in the smiths, but now you are trying to 'lad up' and it's fake.

  • wow what a bunch of bitchy people. andy made a valuable and noticeable contribution to your favorite band - and all you can do is slag him off? he didnt write the songs - but would many of those smiths songs sounded the same without him? he is owed more respect than this.

he is a dj/radio personality probably because music is his life more so than any of you - and so it enables him to be close to what he loves and still earn a dollar.

morrissey and johnny are happily millionaires so can choose to do exactly what they like. andy and mike probably arent in that position. which is a bit of a shame. i doubt they contributed equally - but also doubt they would have been allowed to. its ironic that the two bands from their era who are still going (REM and u2) were established with a sense of equality - everyone is credited and paid equally. do they other two in u2 contribute equally? not sure, but the sense of fairness has led to them making more money, and creating better art together than they could separately.

the sum is greater than that of the individual parts - and the smiths are exactly the same.

imagine is the smiths had been a democracy? we wouldnt have had to listen to kill uncle, malajusted and the healers (among other things).

  • Andy Rourke has caused a huge amount of pain to Morrissey and many other people throughout his life.
We are fans of Morrissey and The Smiths on here.
It has nothing to with money. Morrissey and Johnny Marr are true artists in their own right they have not stopped working since The Smiths breakup!
Morrissey and Johnny Marr have made great contributions to music and art.
All Andy Rourke does is play Smiths tunes on his i-pod while drinking vodka and flirting with fangirls anyone could do that. That is not art and Andy Rourke is not a true artist.
Andy Rourke is a 'bad lad' yes but not an 'artist'.
Andy Rourke is a 'arsehole' yes but not an 'artist'.

  • One of Andy Rourke's heroes Mick Karn, who came to fame as the bassist for the art-rock band 'Japan', from 1974 to 1982 has died. In June 2010, he was diagnosed with 'advanced stage cancer', and he died in January 2011.
