I am a Scottish caricature artist called Edd Travers and I am currently debuting my first solo exhibition of my work at The Auld Kirk Museum, Cowgate, Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, Scotland. G66 1AB. It's a collection of 50 Famous Faces drawn in caricature, one if which is Morrissey, naturally... being the huge fan that I am! The exhibition runs from October 9th till November 6th. Free entry.

Please see the press release (4MB .doc), poster and Moz artwork (below).

Morrissey prints (all signed) will be for sale after the exhibitions run. Contact me via my website should you require any further info.

Kindest regards,

Edd Travers.

  • Hello All. Just thought I'd check in and see what sort of response my little 'news item' was getting! Thank you to 'Diggerz' for being the first to post some positive feedback. I've always known Morrissey fans are the most intelligent, witty, articulate, open minded and forward thinking people with great sense of humour. Diggerz view confirms this.

Unfortunately though, there seems to be a minority of eejits out there who cannot spell but are quick to criticise what they don't understand on this site. Some clown even criticises me for the spelling of my name! Jeez! What's that all about? It's Edd with 2 'd's', okay? Quite common really. Have you never heard of 'Ed, Edd and Eddy?' You need to get out more....

I will try to simplify things for the 'slow-witted' amongst you...a caricature is a drawing or representation of a person whose features have been exaggerated for comic effect, whilst maintaining a recognisable likeness. Let's look at Morrissey. Having studied faces for years in my professional capacity and being well familiar with Morrisseys' face (as I am a real fan of his), I have come to the conclusion that....(and this news may well shock some of you)....Morrissey has a strong, prominent jawline, underbite, thick eyebrows which sit on a heavy brow and a receding hairline, with great quiff. I have also noticed that he has a habit of looking generally quite grumpy in many photos. Sounds crazy eh? I know I'm probably the first guy ever to have noticed this, but there you go...please bear with me!

Now, bearing in mind that it's my job as a caricaturist to exaggerate features for comic-effect, you will perhaps now understand that I have incorporated all of these observations into my drawing and given him quite a big chin. In case you missed the earlier point, I repeat the point of the exercise is: JUST. FOR. FUN.

Still with me? Maybe you'll need to reread this post or get a grown up to explain it to you. The result is a strong, stunning caricature of Morrissey. I created this piece, therefore I am of course allowed to say that. Everyone is of course entitled to their own opinion, which is fine. I have a very thick skin when it comes to criticism, but when morons start criticising my efforts with their inane jibber-jabber, when they themselves cannot produce a single thing of artistic merit, then I have every right to respond. Disagree? Then prove me wrong. Let's see your work then...

Sadly, I kind of expected a bit of a 'backlash' with my Moz caricature. It seems some people just aren't equipped to deal with anything shown or read to them which they perceive to be mocking their idol. Hopefully in time these people will grow up. Meanwhile, I'd like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has contacted me recently, ordered prints, visited my exhibition and left me awesome feedback about my work. Much appreciated and very encouraging! I will be putting photos and brand new caricatures on to my website very shortly in the near future. Stick around if you're interested. If not, don't criticise what you cannot do yourself and take your disapproving comments elsewhere and leave us artists in peace!

Have a great weekend everyone. Chin, chin!

  • I don't really get why someone would want to make fun of Morrissey by "exaggerating his features for comic effect" if they truly were a fan of him, that seems more like the kind of thing one does to someone one dislikes.
If someone absolutely has to make fun of Morrissey I think it at least should be done in an intelligent way, which caricatures definitely are not. Can't really picture caricatures being the sort of humour that Morrissey would found amusing either.

  • Okay, I've had just about enough. There really isn't much else to add other than the point I already made about certain individuals on here who are not mentally equipped to cope with anything that they percieve to be mocking their idol. The hate-filled messages that followed my initial post last week (and death threats I've received) have shown this to be absolutely true. There seems to be a fair few damaged, angry, uptight, imature, mentally-redundant people out there....all with the delusion that they possess the waspish wit and articulate intelligence of Oscar Wilde. Mostly their posts are hilariously tragic and very pathetic indeed. These 'people' have nothing.

The bottom line is kids....I really couldn't give a shiney shite what your opinion is of me or my artwork. You do not know me or understand what I do. Self respect is all that matters to me, so no matter how you insult me with your drivel, I remain a self assured confident artist who is great at what he does. Fact. I'll never stop doing what I do so I wouldn't waste your time trying to discourage me.

There's been speculation that I've anonymously posted replies to posts and picked on someone called 'K-Hate' or whatever her name is. Not true. I don't have the time, nor do I have the inclination to get into slagging matches with people who have learning difficulties (K-Hate describes herself as being 'not right in the head'), so it wouldn't be really fair and not my style. Besides, us artists always put our names to anything we create or write, it's what we do, therefore my name will be at the bottom of this post, like the posts I've submitted before.
My sincere thanks goes to those who like my artwork and have opposed the hate-filled morons which has been encouraging to read.

For those who've dismissed me as an artist and caricature as a valid form of art, that is your opinion which you are entitled to, wrong as it may be. To the particular colossally stupid idiot who stated 'a caricaturist is just a failed artist, nothing more, nothing less...' and that I 'pretend to have a career'...what evidence do you have of this if any? A caricaturist is certainly not a 'failed artist'. You obviously have never heard of Sebastian Kruger, Patrice Riccord, Jean Claude Mulatier, Tom Richmond, Jan Op De Beek...etc, as so the list goes on. Perhaps if you'd done a little research into the subject you are talking about, you wouldn't have come across as such a pig-ignorant arsehole. As for me, I'm not one to boast, but my celebrity caricatures have been exhibited as part of a group in the prestigious Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh back in 2006. I have a long, long client list and have produced artwork for some of the biggest companies in the UK. I am hardly a 'failed artist', friend. As you clearly don't know very much, here's what the curator of my recent exhibition had to say. His name is Peter McCormack:

"It's estimated that there are about 7 billion people on planet earth. Most of us have two eyes, a mouth, a nose, a couple of ears, some teeth and if we're lucky a bit of hair in the right place. But within the tiny space that is within the human face there is infinite variety and endless fascination, incredibly, no two of us are exactly alike. And it's that extraordinary variety and endless possibility that Edd Travers celebrates."

"Edd is part of the noble and time honoured tradition of British Caricature - in our own time we think of caricaturists such as Ralph Steadman, Gerald Scarfe, Steve Bell and the greats of the 18th and 19th centuries...Thomas Rowlandson, George Gillray and George Cruickshank...a rich vein of social comment and political satire which reminds us of the political, religious and social freedoms we cherish in this country which were hard won and should not be taken for granted."

"Caricature is about freedom of expression and goes way back into the mists of time, it comes from an Italian word - 'Caricare' which means to load or charge, so a caricature is a loaded portrait and you will find it
