  • Andy Rourke was more than just an "able" bassist while in the Smiths, he was AMAZING. I can't think of one moment where the bassline wasn't what it needed to be to support the structure of the song. Many times even equalling Johnny's own melody or being the featured element integral to it. I will go so far as to say that Johnny's musicality within the Smiths recordings was heavily bolstered by how greatly Andy's playing complimented his style and sound.(I realize there is some debate as to who wrote the basslines, but I asked Andy when I met him and I choose to believe that he is truthful when he says he came up with them.) At any rate, he certainly played the hell out of that bass both live and in studio. Most importantly he brought soul to a group that without him would have just been another white '80s british band with catchy songs. I see it as a case where the sum of the parts is also as great as the whole.
