Damien Dempsey posted a letter to his fans today which includes, among other things, a brief account of an impromptu singing session with Morrissey:
I had a sing song with Morrissey and his gang in the Four Seasons Hotel before his show in the National Stadium coming up to Christmas there, his crew were in awe when I walked in first followed by my older brother Gar who's a little bigger than me and behind Gar was the oldest brother Emmet who's bigger than Gar again, the Russian dolls some folks call us. Morrissey sang a bit of Gilbert O'Sullivan and I sang 'Paddy on the Railway' and Gar sang 'Go to Sea no More'. Morrissey was lovin it but they all had to shoot to bed for the impending show and they left the three of us with the barman who promptly bid us goodnight and left, we sat in silence lookin at each other for a second, stood up collectively as instinct kicked in, treaded towards the bar with our dwindling guinness's and...etc etc.
If only someone had had a tape recorder...

What's on our rider? Eddi Reader - Irish Times

Excerpt:

Who is the most famous person to have shown up at one of your gigs? John Hurt! Also, Tilda Swinton, George Michael, Morrissey. Oh, and in spirit I reckon my Da, with his arms over Elvis’s shoulder, stands in the wings.

...but don't we all. Article from the Sunday Times about a band called The Drums:

The Drums just love Manchester

Excerpt:

“It’s a cliché, I know,” says their front man, Jonathan Pierce, on the top floor of the two-storey flat that he shares with the rest of the Drums (and sundry friends and animals) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, “but the person who said everything I ever wanted to say is Morrissey. What a poet. He literally changed my life, swept me away.” The greatest single of the past 30 years, according to Pierce, is the Smiths’ This Charming Man; the most perfect song, Morrissey and Marr’s There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. On his bedroom wall hangs his proudest acquisition, a sleeve of the Smiths’ debut single, Hand in Glove, given to them by the Smiths’ drummer, Mike Joyce, that bears the message: “To the Drums from the Drums” (this was how Morrissey insisted Joyce be described on the original sleeve).

All 12 issues of Smiths Indeed, the legendary Smiths fanzine from 1986 and 1987, have been reprinted for a second time due to increasing demand. The fanzine, edited by Mark Taylor, was sold on the band's merchandise stall during the 1986 Queen Is Dead UK Tour, and went on to sell copies across the world. The fanzine was reprinted in 2006 to mark its 20th anniversary and the original print-run sold out. A limited edition of 100 sets of all 12 issues will be released on February 4, 2010, on a first come, first served basis. For more information, email [email protected]
