Is there a light that never goes out? by Paul Morley, The Observer
Sunday 31 October 2010

The Smiths split up 23 years ago, but in a Derby pub their sound lives again. Must all pop end up as nostalgia?

The video of Morley's interview with The Smyths' lead singer, Graham Sampson, is also here -

I got recommended a podcast on iTunes which contains (in the first two episodes, anyway) a section called 'Morrissey: Stand-Up Comedian'.

This features an impression of Morrissey performing at a Salford comedy club, and as far as I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong) his 'material' is made up of genuine quotes from magazine interviews, etc.

It's the best impression of Morrissey I've ever heard. Judging by the podcast's cover image, the guy looks like a fan, so I think it's safe to say it's a homage rather than a jibe.

Anyway, made me laugh.

Milestones: Johnny Marr is 47 today; watch The Smiths’ full May 18, 1985, concert - slicing up eyeballs

Today’s the 47th birthday of one of the signature guitarists of his generation: Johnny Marr of The Smiths… and, in the ensuing years, The Pretenders, The The, Modest Mouse and The Cribs, among others. In honor of this peerless player, and acknowledging the reason we care so much, we present a full Meat is Murder-era Smiths show, filmed for Spanish television on May 18, 1985, in Madrid.

The concert is one of the more well-known video documents of the band — and for good reason; the quality is superb. You can watch the whole thing in the embedded playlist below, or check out individual parts at Slicing Up Video. Plus, we’ve got a birthday bonus: a short profile of Marr from MTV’s “120 Minutes” in 1987, following the breakup of the Smiths and during Marr’s short tenure with the Pretenders...
