Do you feel a lot of Morrissey fans are very judgmental towards one another?
Yes, I feel Morrissey fans can be very snobby & judgmental
No, they don't seem to be judgmental
I really don't care, it has nothing to do with my interest in Morrissey

I just fell sad that this comes on because the annoucement of Latin America dates.... (sigh!). The question should be: "Do you think Morrissey fans think their prejudice will keep them warm tonight?".
Peace, Love and Harmony... maybe in the next world, maybe in the next world.
Besides of everything what makes me truly happy is "Morrissey is coming to 4 brazilian dates and I'll be there; and I hope you all, (including Australia)might see him soon".
God bless you all

Oh.... and another thing... if you voted for it means you're judgemental towards Morrissey fan... You see? There's no way out... there's no point in it... Why giving so much importance to this?
Come on, I want to know about more important things about Morrissey....

Judgemental? Maybe. Is everyone entitled to express their opinion? Yes. Does this poll have anything to do with all of our love of Morrissey? No.

It really makes no difference to me... Where I live, even learning of another Morrissey fan (let alone meeting one!) within 20 miles of myself is amazing.

I believe that the majority are very snobby and judgemental. It seems like most people want Morrissey all to themselves, as part of some clique, as though they have found something so unique that they have forgotten how to share. They think that they are so "special" and don't want to let others onto their "secret" because they are now somehow so "different" and have some kind of new "insight" and "lifestyle". The music is for everybody, meaning all races are welcome to enjoy his music. And there should be no debate, no debate, no debate.....

Who cares? I hate you all. Most of all I hate the ones who say "why can't we all get along", "morrissey is about love", blah blah blah. Boo-hoo. You are all a bunch of whiny crybabies. If I never meet another Morrissey fan, I will be none the worse for it. How's that for judgmental??

sadly, many morrissey fans ARE snobby and pretentious and unpleasant... having been a fan for almost 15 years, i have met far more foolish, pretentious, arrogant and hypocritical morrissey "fans" than i have cool ones...which is sad.

i won't name names...not today anyway.

maybe this makes ME judgmental, but hey, when faced with truly unpleasant people, one tends to judge them as unpleasant.

Well, we know Morrissey, although not anti-social, does not, shall we say, mingle. I think he would avoid all this judgemental behaviour from his fans like the plague. Why anyone wants to "own" someone is beyond me...I have enough trouble looking after myself! Imagine Morrissey's life before the Smiths, as he described it. He was quite anonymous, despite his shining brilliance. No one cared tuppence for him, then; but as with anyone in the limelight he is very much in demand. I sometimes think about famous people before they became famous ~ they may have been a bit like us. Morrissey certainly knew this a long, long time ago. The person next door to you may be the next "Elvis", and the world will try to own him...better get your foot in the door before then, so you can beat the crowd! Just a thought...

Is there anything wrong with being judgemental? There are too many people in this world. You canīt possibly like or agree with them all. It would be a boring world, if everyone agreed about everything. So letīs agree to disagree!

(Here is a poll that was presented to MOZ himself- results below!!!)

Question: Morrissey, how do you feel your "fans" are towards you and your music?

A.) They constantly feel the need to talk about which of my records is the best- and the WORST. They obsess over every word I've ever been quoted as speaking, and demand an explaination whenever I meet them- when I really didn't mean anything other than what I said. And they call me a racist- based on where my tour Itiniery takes me.

B.) My fans are all just delightful examples of what humanity should be.

C.) I don't really care as long as they buy my records!!

results:

evil psuedo moz look-a-likes:
A: 53% B: 22% C: 1%

Morrissey's evil twin brother:
A: 5% B: 66% C: 30%

Morrissey's mum:
A: 40% B: 0% C: 60%

Morrissey himself:

I believe it is only the latter generations of fans who are guilty, In the early days...all of The Smiths fans were united in their interest because it was so unpopular to be a fan. Now to be a Morrissey fan is viewed as more of a fashion statement than anything real or genuine....it is all about who has the most posters or that rare B-Side you can't find anywhere. Take me back to Dear ol' Blighty!

morrissey fans are people...
people tend to have many sides/faces/
constitutions of personality...
there really is no use in generalizing...

one thing about the more political fans
that ticks me would be their dogmatic
interpretations of Morrissey's views...

but then, they are working through their
own issues via his politics...

think for yourself and refuse to take on
opinions of others w/out first considering
and debating the issue for yourself...

Welly Welly Welly, Look I don't care who you are where you come from, your race or color or whatever, ALL PEOPLE ARE JUDGMENTAL in their own strange Way! I have had my run in with very uncoprmising Morrissey fans otherwise they suck ASS!Also I met some really cool ones! But yet you can't judge anyone over the stupid computer, you actually have to sit down and have a conversation with then and then you judge. But seriously this is getting out of hand! Look I really seriously don't care what anyone thinks of me that may sound arrogant but Its not! I feel if people have something to say they should just say it, its better out than in but also if you say too much people honestly do get hurt or angry and thats when people need to realize that people have feelings and the truth hurts! If people think of me as being ditzy or just some nit wit that has two brain cells, I seriously don't care! At the end of the day I realize that PEOPLE (mostly 85%) Do SUCK! But I live with it! Sorry if im such a Chatter Box, I just needed to get that off my chest! Well thanks everyone! Good-Bye For Now!

I think it all depends on the individual, not all
moz fans are judgemental, some are. But iam generalizing and saying that moz fans have a lot
in common and they tend to be kinda over-emotional
and possesive, they love him so much they feel like, well no one else can like him..but we must share, because we're not alone and there will never be a time when we're liking things that
no one else likes. So i think everyone should relax and try to be kind, but if your naturally
judgemental, like i am, i admit it, i am terribly
judgemental..there's no way you can change that, just try to think before you say things and this applys to everyone and non-moz fans, think before
you say things, try to understand other people's
views..

love,
Moz Gurlie

i think its not a matter of being pretentious or not for most people. i thinks it more a matter of this is the one thing i know way to much about and like anything else if you do enough research you can support any theory you feel like. which coupled with the basic human need for nitpicking turns the discussion board to its present state.

I think that the main problem is the quick and anonymous (or at least distant) communication made possible by the internet. It's not anything like real human interaction and it allows a person to take on a different personality allowing him or her to vent his or her spleen or worst feelings. Whatever legitimate cause for the hatred and anger , it expresses itself in the worst form because of this anonymity or distance. However, the anger may have a legitimate cause. If a person lives in the world without feeling fury, he or she is sleepwalking. So it is just as nasty to take the condescending position that castigates any viciousness as something necessarily utterly mindless or base. Sympathy is required.

For the past few years, I have been totally isolated from anything related to Morrissey or even his fans - I didn't even know anybody who "liked" his music, or even heard of him. It had always been my dream to fill my life, if not with Morrissey himself, then with people who enjoyed his music and him as a person as much as I do. My only contact with anyone who is a Morrissey fanatic is thru the internet, and yet in the six or so months that I've been trying to find someone to connect with, if only on the level of a distant friendship, I have yet to find even that. Maybe it's me who's the judgemental one? I always thought Morrissey fans were the kindest, most wonderful people in the world. Yet I feel like an outcast amongst "my own" people. Sometimes I think even Morrissey would not like me, and that would be the greatest devastation.

I have been to a couple "Morrissey Nights", and many concerts (the former is where I made most of my observations, as it is hard to talk at a concert), and can truthfully say there are many broken and bitter Morrissey fans. Perhaps they have been abused for so many years that we can never expect them to be well-adjusted, friendly people. Maybe this frustration will find a higher expression in art, who knows? But hopefully Morrissey's recordings are only some of the brilliant gems, bright as they may be, in your dazzling music collection... classic jazz (Miles, Coltrane etc.), classical (Debussy, Chopin, etc.), rock (e.g. David Bowie), new wave, blues, uplifting drum n bass, Detroit techno, Chicago house, ad infinitum.

I didn't make this up to cause any problems. I just add ideas for polls here & there not expecting them to be used. Because I suggested this poll it doesn't mean I believe that the fans are snobby. I gave more than one option. I have just heard people say that before so I was wondering how many people really thought so. If people do get offended by this, sorry, but than again maybe you shouldn't waste your time responding to it.

Somebody posted a poem to the Morrissey web site and it was absolutely torn to shreds.
Maybe the Morrissey web site is not the place to post your emotional and poetic outbursts but surely not everyone had to destroy this individual's offering?
I feel that all Morrissey fans have something in common and could develop friendships out of this but we all seem to hate the fact that others like him. Maybe we all want him entirely to ourselves?

Yes, (most) Morrissey fans are judgemental, but wait: a) almost every band has a very snobby fanbase who think they are the band/artist's only "true" fans. As an even bigger fan of the Manic Street Preachers than Morrissey (ooh, I bet you really hate me now), I can tell you that a lot of Manics fans are just as snobby as Moz fans (maybe even more). If you've gotten into the Manics after 1996, then, supposedly, you cannot be a "real" fan. Never mind the fact that I'm only 16 and live in America (where the Manics greatest album was never even released), I'm still not a "real" fan, and Morrissey fans treat me pretty much the same way. And this is really sad, cos the whole point of Moz (and the Manics as well) is to provide a sense of belonging to people who may feel like society's outsiders, but the elitist attitude of most fans makes you feel like even more of an outsider (like Courtney said before). And b) this has absolutely nothing to do with Morrissey or his music, and is quite irrevelant, except to inflame even more hatred. And don't hate me too much, cos there's already enough people who do...it's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind...

People Suck Most of the time!

I wonder if there will ever be day were everyone would just get along and shut the hell up! Damn what is this world coming to! Maybe I just don't understand! Yeah I feel that some Morrissey fans are very snobby and totally don't give me the time of day to get to talk about the one thing we like ( Morrissey)! But yet I meet some really cool Morrissey fans off and online! Basically this poll is kind of a good one cos I feel that this is one of those thing where everyone gets to know each others feelings and POV on life, and I think that is Super! I've meet those Morrissey fans that think they are the only ones in the world that Love the guy and his music but you know what I think they SUCK ASS! But thats about it for me! I always liked The Smiths because nobody around me did. I loved the songs, I felt they were made for me, only for me.
Do you know what I mean? I even cry sometimes when I hear songs like Break Up The Family, Well I Wonder, Seasick, yet still docked. (just sometimes...)
And that's why everybody whined about the Latin gigs. "What??? What the hell is he going to do in South America? They don't understand him, not like I do!!!! They don't feel the songs like I do."
You know, I don't blame anyone for saying that because I think I AM the only one in this entire idiot world who can really feel his songs.
And I think that a real fan have to be not only snobby but also emotionally a little sick.
Eureka!
The Answer: Everybody Is Sick :)

ps.:About prejudice opinions? Nobody is saint, we all have our prejudices, I have so many when I pass near the favelas(poor houses) here in Rio, and if you are emotionally sick... well...

Please Morrissey, make it Rio!!!

of course morrissey fans are judgemental, and i'm proud of it. moz fans on the whole tend to be far more educated then there top 40 brethren, in that we commonly feel robbed when our favourite artists suddenly become media darlings. (not that morrissey isn't revered by many in the media: the difference with the moz being that he earned his stripes through years of experience and brilliance). but still our allegiance to morrissey transcends to admiration of other artists we proudly listen too (knowing that others have yet to catch on: this happens to me all the time). so go ahead and call us snobby! the masses are simply jealous of us. considering they are still listening to poison or mr. big and wearing acid wash jeans.

Yes, I have had my experience with the ultra snobby Morrissey fan...those 30 year old folks who think anyone younger than them can not appreciate Morrissey or The Smiths because they have "loved" him longer. As well as those people who are upset because Morrissey is crooning to his Latino based crowd...get over it I say. Worrying about our precious Mozziah going mainstream? Well my dears it will not happen...and as far as his fan base getting larger, hurrah! I find that wherever I go, the interest in Morrissey is a unifying topic. That intense love I felt at Coachella toward Morrissey did not issue from bitter old smithees but younger, vibrant and mostly Latino based crowd. It was a beautiful experience...nothing was more apparent than the admiration for the salford lad.
Morrissey is my number one priority for music, but he is not the only one...how narrow a view to have. The man listens to other bands other than himself!

I just feel the people supporting this current tour are his fans...AND those that come after...how horrid for Morrissey to be forgotten when he passes on and this generation dies.

That is thankfully, all.

Hey... I just want you all to know that Alain is the stud okay! And no I am not judgemental. I think all the fans are some of the greatest people I know, and I am glad to meet them when I can. I also think that this question is not really valid because we all share something in common, MORRISSEY! And that is in itself something that unites us.

MORRISSEY IS VERY SNOBBY AND JUDGEMENTAL.
If you thought MALADJUSTED was a horrible

"IRISH BLOOD ENGLISH HEART"
Since EL VEZ is one of Morrisseys biggest

If you've ever been to a gig early-ish you see all kinds of frankly wierd types, desperately clinging to their little clique, sad looking fat lookalikes sneering at people who haven't given up their life to follow Moz around everywhere. These are forty year old men, and they look down on us who've got more stuff goingon. They're not friendly, they can't have a conversation which isn't about train times and the third London gig better than the second...

I'll tell you what - I went to the Morrissey gig in Nottingham - and if you weren't singing along, you were frowned at.
My boyfriend got me into Morrissey about 6 months ago, I don't have too many records (two Smiths and two Moz), but I've been to the Manchester 'Moz and Smiths' nights. What does it take to be a true fan?

This question is absurd. Morrissey himself is snobby and very judgemental! So I ask this, is it right to be critisizing his fans for something that he is himself? I have met some kind people who are into his music, we may argue about which album is the best or song, but that's just the fun of it. To hear others opinions and to see what justifys them. I have also had the unpleasent experince of meeting people who are there because Morrissey has become somewhat of a trend. They want to fight, to say rude comments, and have no respect for any other person around them. But hey, Doesn't that describe the world?

Why do you care so much about who's being snobby who's not, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that were here to enjoy his music. You guys are taking it too far. The only thing that matters to me is Morrissey, not the people who judge others.

It's time to come clean. I've loved Morrissey for five or six years now and met countless other fans, through writing fanzines and surfing the web etc., and many of them have been pretty diehard. A part of me always wished I had the money/time to set off round the world following him and his band to the point of stalking, as some of you do, but the weekend of the Hartlepool/Glasgow gigs last year opened my eyes slightly. I came to realise that of all the hardcore fans I've met, I only think of two of them as friends. I think Lynne East's earlier comment pretty much hit the nail on the head. The impression I had been given of these people who turn up at gigs six hours before the doors open was of a group of quiet but friendly people who happened to be passionate about the same thing. In reality I felt pretty uncomfortable around them. I found the group of people I was with to be one giant clique, and the greatest irony of the situation was that you could tell EVERYONE was looking down their nose at someone and nobody seemed to like each other. Some people (who I won't name) made it blatantly clear that they didn't like me before they had even spoken to me. When I got to the barrier at Hartlepool I was ashamed to realise that although I knew the names of practically everyone in the front row, I didn't actually know any of them terribly well. The saddest thing is that you learn a lot about people you think you know when you put them it that situation. People I had previously thought of as 'friends' showed themselves to be two-faced, thoughtless and rude, and had a very strange idea of friendship. (I can be a complete and utter bitch as well, but I'm amazed I didn't hit someone that weekend.) Of course I've met some lovely, lovely people as well, but I think it's fair to say that anyone who is devoted to the level of sacrificing huge parts of their life for a pop star - no matter how wonderful he is - is lacking something fundamental.
I'm glad I've now done that whole 'queuing' bit, partly for the experience and partly so that I know how bloody pointless it is (as the bulk of the afternoon has no bearing on where you end up in the crowd) and how much I'm NOT missing. It's a shame that two of the best gigs I've ever seen (Hartlepool THE best) were placed in the context of such a bloody awful weekend. Of course it was worth it - it was Moz!!! - but honestly, if you won't speak to someone just because they've seen Moz more times than you, or met him more times than you, I'm sorry, but you've missed the point.

I think you all would be selling yourselves short if you didn't honestly say that Morrissey fans are judgeMENTAL--stress on the mental...
This is not to put anybody down, but merely to say, quit being so quick to correct and compete. There is no scale that is going to weigh who has more knowledge, and who is the biggest fan and so on and so forth. This poll was a lethal one.
Time to face facts, there are a slew of know-it-alls that respond to these polls and discussions. People that make you wonder if they are leaving their comments in honor of the person who this website is indebted to, or just to come on and downplay the responses left by others, you know who you are.
Not to say you don't reserve the right to say whatever you please, but hey, you asked the question, I gave the honest answer.
Morrissey is fabuous, and I am sure we can all agree, isn't that enough, without knitpicking every little fart that comes through here???

behind the hatred, there lies a murderous desire...

I wrote to the morrisseytour girls after the Liverpool concert last year, my comments were included in the review and i got loads of stick via the message board over a couple of innocent words.
The really contradictory thing is though, face to face, at the gigs, there is an enourmous bundle of love felt between the fans. It really IS strange!

this really is sad but true; most fans are insane i think. they all think morrissey will love them if they can only get in his face. give it up people, his music may love you but HE never will. so try to get along with the others around you, be glad there are others out there because god knows most everyone inhabiting this f**ked up planet is a piece of crap.

i heard people in a line talking about morrissey's body hair grooming habits, VERY matter-of-factly, like they knew for sure......and as if it bloody mattered. another girl said she'd "step on my best friends head and squash her skull" to be near morrissey. pity, i'm sure morrissey would sooner crush her skull than that of his best friend. but of course that only means he's got sense and she doesn't.

please, be nice to each other and stop acting like a**holes because it is very sad and very stupid. get over yourselves, please!!!!!

I think what you have to ask yourselves is this:
Does everybody go to the tours expecting a set full Morrissey singing Smiths songs or are they there to listen to his latter day stuff?
The Smiths only released five albums, Moz had released eight (including the live one).
Work it out!
At the end of the day, Johnny Marr's got a solo career on the go and Morrissey's a tad too stubborn to reunite with him. Plus, you'll never see those two in the same room as the other two, especially Mike Joyce.

I think that there must be space for debate and intellectual discussion, since that is the basis of free-thought. Morrissey has such a great intellectual projection because he disagrees, and he also fights for this freedom.
I read now a post in a section in this site that was archived, it was from a Brazilian Morrissey fan that was afraid of all that discussion because he thought it could result in physical violence during the concert. No, it is not the same thing at all. If there is an intellectual space the debate is naturally constricted to this field, the level of thought and debate opposes violence naturally. The main task is creating a democratic space where ideas can be exchanged and debate is possible. "Love peace and harmony" yes in the sense that nobody wants fights, but we do have our right to think as individuals and the right of intellectual disagreement.
