"so we go inside and we gravely read the STONES..."
can it be THE ROLLING STONES? the magazine?
"all those people all those lives where are they now?"
meaning, fame is so temporary, and being famous in a day doesnt mean you`ll live forever.
and all the plagiarism lines - maybe this was the criticism expressed in the rolling stones - saying that morrissey rips off other people.
maybe it was all a real deal, invoking moz to write a song about it.

i always understood it as the tombstones...but you never know..

> "so we go inside and we gravely read the STONES..."

Rolling Stones reference

This is the only Stones reference I know of in Moz lyrics:

You silly old man
In your misguided trousers
With your mas-ca-ra
and your Fender guitar
And your think-you-can-arouse her's

And the song that you just sang,
It sounds exactly like the last one
And the next one
I bet you it will sound
Like ths one

So GET OFF THE STAGE!!!!

> "so we go inside and we gravely read the STONES..."
> can it be THE ROLLING STONES? the magazine?

I don't think Morrissey cares about the Rolling Stones or about Rolling Stone magazine. Johnny Marr is quite a Keith Richards fan, though. The 'plaggarism' line is probably about his critics, but probably not about anyone specifically. The song is mostly about Linder. Linder Linder Linder. Good old Linder. Where is she now?

i really think this beautiful piece of prose speaks for itself and as well has a timeless quality that transcends such relatively petty things as critic's reviews in the Rolling Stone and like that other person said.. he addressed the Rolling Stones in "get off the stage".... i doubt he was concerned with them here...
...and likewise for "all those people all those lives" ... timeless and all inclusive, i somehow doubt he restricted this statement to popstars and the like... though maybe he did and i just want to be included... "hopes and dreams and passions just like MINE" to transcend to greatness in whatever your passion may be.. to be timeless one's self....

...but thats just my interpretation, everyone is welcome to their own.

You are SO tolerant.

Good lord Noam, I'd expect better from a great linguist. The song is about hanging out in a graveyard. The stones are gravestones. "All those people all those lives" are people whose names are on the stones. The plagiarism reference is an ironic reference to Morrissey's penchant for plagiarism.
