In Ireland (and I assume the UK) receiving social welfare payments (i.e DHSS payemnts e.g the dole sick pay etc,) is viewed as a right. Everyone living in the Irish State, thatis Eire or simply Ireland, and not Southern ireland or The Free State or the Republic Etc. will receive a payment from the Government at some stage of there lives. Everyone regardless of income receives a payment from the Governamnt on a monthly basis called Childrens Allowance -about €260 for 2 Kids. Also EVERYONE over the age of 65 receives the state pension. This is because we live in society that understands the needs of the less well off. It has severe shortcomings, this is true, but in my opinion it is something to be proud off - we look after those who have fallen on hard times. We don't leave them to rot.
