This was the first Moz gig I've been to on this tour when I've been sober, so I thought I'd provide the set list. Aren't I nice?

Morrissey was fairly chatty and funny tonight, but for some inexplicable reason, there was no encore. It was a good performance, and the crowd seemed to respond pretty well, so it was a bit weird when "That's Life" came on almost as soon as the band left the stage, and the house lights came up. The audience was very disappointed, and a lot of booing ensued.

Moz had his right index finger in a bandage, and a bandage further up the same arm. I don't know if this was there at earlier dates, or if it's a new injury.

I remember Morrissey talking about Radio 1 refusing to play 'The Youngest Was The Most Loved.' He then went on to say that Virgin Radio have also said they won't be playing it. He rather angrily exclaimed, "What the fuck do you have to do to get on the radio!?"
After a song or two, he apologised for swearing! But when he asked the crowd if he should swear more often, everyone cheered!

At one point, he bent down to some Yank in the crowd, and said something like, "Can I ask you a question? How do you afford to go to every show? How much does it cost you? Share it with us all!" The bloke responded, "A lot," to which Morrissey said, "Typical American answer - elusive."

He also talked about playing on that stage twenty years ago, but we won't remember because we were all "listening to Phil Collins."

There was also some typical word-play during songs, such as "I think I am born..."

OH MY GOD! I'm really shocked, don't even know what to say!
I'm somewhere in between of "I should get the tickets for the rest of the London dates, because I can't end it like this" and " what if it's gonna be the same?"

My first Morrissey concert on this tour ... and I'm finding it hard to put into words how I feel.

The beginning of the concert was fantastic - I felt so emotional that I was in tears when the great man took to the stage! And the first three tracks were just stunning.

But the show ended on a rather flat note, with no encore and some people booing when it became clear that he wasn't going to come back.

People around me seemed to think that Morrissey might be upset with the reaction of the audience and/or the sound quality.

So a disappointing note to end on, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in a standing venue to see how that will compare.

He kept asking if it sounded okay - which I found a bit weird, it kind of broke the barrier - but to be honest I thought the sound quality was excellent - you could hear the real detail of the band - Life is a pigsty was amazing, as was at last I am born. No one could argue how good Still ill and How soon is now sounded - infintely better than in 1984. But I'm not allowed to say that because no one can say that the band are any good - when of course they are; they sound really tight. Everyone cvheered for Boz as he took centre stage went for a pee and a shirt change. I think Moz had a sore thoat - he wasn't as chipper - maybe he hadn't set the video for Heartbeat. but he didn't introduce the band for the first time EVER....

Ganglord to me sounded a little pedestrian - but he did miss some words because a couple behind me had obviously memorised and were singing it even though he wasn't - One gripe - he missed the final chorus of On the Streets I ran - and that's the best bit, so I was a bit pooey about that one. I would have loved a few more none album tracks, simply to up the energy of the crowd and keep the Moz sweet - ie. Now my heart is full, speedway, Everyday is like sunday especially given the nature of a sunday night at the palladium, suedehead - and what I'd give for You've got everything now. A boy can wish. But enough already - it was a corker, it really was - and the new single should bring the album right back up the charts again. Who needs Virgin eh?

Unfortunately the sound was terrible which I suppose was the explanation for no encore. However, Morrissey and his musicians were great - Pigsty was astonishing - really fantastic.

Can I just ask why there always has to be smelly North Americans wherever you go? No offence to all of you from the USA (most of you are really lovely I'm sure) but ... at what point after 60 straight minutes of screaming at Morrissey to look at you do you realise that he will not look at you if you carry on like this let alone touch your smelly fat hand which you're poking in everyone's faces?

Thrusting yourself forward because Morrissey MUST look at you annoys security and those around you who can't hear Morrissey over your shouting about yourself. Do you notice how Morrissey seems to approach those people showing a little more humility?

Again, don't mean to be nasty to Americans so please don't take it that way but there does seem to be a certain breed of large arrogant consumers who don't do your country any favours ...

The music is very dramatic. I was up in the UC and it wasn't quite loud enough to make as big an impact as it could have done. The Palladium is for light entertainment and musicals so it can't cope with big dramatic rock concerts.

Having said that the beauty of "Far off Places", "Pigsty", "Trouble Loves Me" and "Work of Art" transcended the limitations of the venue. Just stunning visually and musically. If he'd only played those I would have gone home happy.

Must be a pretty awkward meeting with his marketing people.

Sanctuary have placed Radio ads for Ringleader on Virgin i.e. actually payed them to play You Have Killed Me instead of it going on their playlist.

Virgin went bonkers for First of the Gang and rightly so. It seemd to be played several times a day when it came out.
It is, by a million miles his best single of the 21st Century. Poetic, humourous lyrics, fantastic guitar parts, an amazing middle eight and a brilliant, uplifting vocal melody.
If only Ringleader was stuffed full of songs of that quality, it'd get a lot more airplay (although R1 would still keep away).

I still prefer Ringleader to Quarry but FOTG blows the socks off any of the ROTT singles (including In the Future although that may stand a better chance on Virgin)...

Leaving the show without the encore....I never thought I could feel sooooo sad about it. Shame because the show has been great and Moz was in fantastic form. He was fairly chatty and he almost seemed to look for some contact with the crowd as he went to shake hands few times. Sweet also that he went to talk the american fan (and didn't mention Julia).
From OTSIR you coul tell he wasn't happy with the sound and the song sounded a tad all over the places compared to usual. Trouble Loves Me and Pigsty were fantastic.

One more thing I am seriusly upset about: what is it with people sitting at gigs?? (...yes I know; I was there too..It is a sitting venue!). I was in the Royal Circle and pretty much everyone followed the gig sitting down. I know we are all getting old and grey but for christsake! I feel so bad for Moz and the band; it so disrespectful, expecially when they perform their asses off the way they do!
Poor Gary came so close to the edge of the stage at one point that was litterally standing on someone's hands; did anyone even attemp to stretch a hand? No. I really don't get it and especially in 'encore-less' nights like these, I can't help thinking that Moz gets a bit upset about the crowd.

Anyway....Chrissie Hynde and Stella McCartney sitting few rows away and a guy that looked so much like Moz that was scary!

Managed to catch a glimpse of the main man around 20 past 7 when he got off his car just outside the stage door.

Let's hope next sunday will end a bit better.

....handed back 100 tickets to the box office tonight at 5pm. "No friends" they joked. I was there when this happened as my tickets were lost months ago and I was awaiting my re-prints in the box office. There was no queue for returns so folk were walking in and buying tickets for £32!
As for no encore tonight, well, who does he think he is, New Order? I was really bummed out as I thought it was all going fabulously.

Was thinking on my way home tonight what Morrissey reminds me of when he's up on stage.

Tonight when they played the intro to Trouble Loves Me which I recognised but couldn't put a name to (possible due to the idiot near to me shouting out for Reel around the Fountain through it) he turned to the crowd and said seriously "this is your history, but none of you recognise it".

He's just like a schoolteacher who will enjoy having a laugh with his pupils, but be warned, don't push things too far or you will end up writing lines at the end of the show.

No he didn't play an encore, but he did make a reference to Billy Dainty............which was nice!

Great start and I had a great seat at the front. 'Trouble Loves Me' was awsome. But our man lost his way, his words and finally his temper.

If this was my only gig of this tour I would be gutted by the way it ended.

I've heard and read about gigs being ruined by Moz being in a strop, but this is the first time I've seen it with my own eyes.

I was up on the upper circle, right on the left edge, which gave me a great view, although the leftmost side of the stage was blocked by the edge of the balcony. Apart from the occasional Moz walkabout, I didn't miss much of the action, however.

It was a cracking start - first 4 tracks were great, Girlfriend In A Coma was a real highlight, but things fell away badly during On The Streets I Ran. He asked the audience about the sound midsong, and then just stopped singing at the end. From that point on, he was clearly unhappy, and put his fingers in his ears on at least half a dozen occasions, so maybe his monitors were playing up.

There were a few references to the sound again during the rest of the set, but it was obvious an encore was planned. The band clearly left giving the kind of fake goodbyes you normally get at the end of the main set, but 30 seconds later That's Life piped up and the house lights came on.

To me the sound was fine. A bit constricted, as you'd expect in a theatre that's got an out-of-house sound rig wired up, and Jesse's guitar was very quiet, but otherwise nothing to complain about from where I was seated. There was clearly something wrong onstage though.

I think tonight showed two things:

1) Morrissey shouldn't do seated gigs, particularly in such a close-confined theatre like the Palladium. The stalls were almost motionless all night, and in the circle, nobody really knew what to do with themselves. Even those that were on their feet didn't have space to move, so it was all a bit awkward. I think it gave the band the impression that the audience weren't into it, which reflected in a few comments Moz made to the effect of "someone say something encouraging quick". It's a feeling I got during the Meltdown shows, which contrasted massively with the high energy atmospheres of Earls Court and the MEN Arena.

2) Much of the new album doesn't play well live. Mid-tempo and live never really mixes well, and apart from You Have Killed Me, Life Is A Pigsty (fantastic tonight, incidentally) and I Will See You In Far-Off Places, the rest of the album tracks played were completely unengaging. I don't think I'll ever see a live show ending with a more boring song than At Last I Am Born.

I got the impression that the audience was ready to get on their feet for a really explosive finale like Irish Blood English Heart or There Is A Light. It didn't come, and it left a bad taste. All the more irritating as my girlfriend had dragged herself from her sickbed to come, and she was looking forward to hearing either one of those tracks. As was I, for that matter.

On the plus side, Pigsty was outstanding, Trouble Loves Me has never sounded better, Girlfriend In A Coma and How Soon Is Now were sublime, and there was a great lyric change during Still Ill - "Am I still ill? Oh yes thank fuck".

The minuses leave the bitter aftertaste though. If he expects me to fork out £32.50 to be up in the gods, he's going to have to do better. If he'd played a blinder, I'd have gone after tickets for the remainder of the tour. After tonight, I'm leaving well alone.

Well my boyfriend and I were at this gig and I totally agree with Morrissey getting the hump and walking off!
We were literally in the back seats of the upper circle (M 14+15) but still had a great view of the man. We could also see the front 5 or so stalls and there was NO MOVEMENT at all during the whole gig. People all around us in the Upper Circle were moving, shouting and singing along (the real fans I suspect) but nothing in the Stalls. Some people were even leaning on the stage looking bored. Now if i had front row seats that would definately be moving and trying to get on stage!
Also he had some sound problems and couldnt hear what he was singing.
This was shown when he said things like 'is this any good?' and 'can you hear me'. Also in reference to the bad crowd he said 'quick say something nice (coz he felt that people wernt enjoying him).

Saying that, ending with 'At last I am Bored' was a strange decision. Prehaps he was signing about himself!!!!

During the Palladium gig tonight Moz said "Floyd Patterson has gone". I checked on Wikepedia and saw this.
"Floyd Patterson (January 4, 1935 – May 11, 2006) was an American heavyweight boxing champion who made history multiple times in the sport of boxing. He had a record of 55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw, with 40 wins by knockout. He once said that a champion should conduct himself as one in real life as well as in the ring."

A bit odd not getting 'Irish Blood' at the end, but he was obviously not happy at all with the sound- I guess it must have been monitor-related because it sounded fine in the stalls. And overall it was a good show, the band still sound incomparably better than two years back (sad not to have Alain touring but Jesse definitely adds a bit of energy, as does Matt), Trouble Loves Me was fantastic and, at least until the sound started bothering him, Moz was on fine form.
Incidentally, I think someone mis-quoted a lyric change before, I heard 'Am I still ill? Oh yes thank Christ (not 'fuck')'. I think more than one f-word in a night would have been distinctly vulgar...!

Considering this is what WE, actual Moz fans who pay loads to go and see him think of his gigs (quite a poor setlist, Moz being moody etc etc).. what the HELL are the average Joes who attend V gonna think when he HEADLINES the festival????

I'm suprised to find everyone so forgiving. I thought he behaved like a petulant child this evening and I don't blame anyone for booing at the end. Such a shame.

It sounds like they're either going to have to overhaul the sound system or the remaining two gigs will be moved to another venue.

The Mozfather will not accept anything less...

From my perspective in Row N, the crowd were crap. It was like dancing in a field of fridges. All forty somethings on a night out to see 'that guy from the smiths'. He kept singing around where the words normally go to see if anyone was singing along: they rarely were. He kept asking if the sound was ok, and commenting on them applauding the songs cause the crowd wasnt appreciating alot of the stuff.

Hence why in Still Ill he exclaims 'thank christ' after first verse as people were joining in on this classic.

He also seemed to have a problem with the sound as he kept putting his fingers in his ears, too many times to be a comical Morrissey gesture.

All in all a disappointing gig on the part of the crowd. I, however, quite enjoyed it.

Well, that's what it looked like to me. I've seen him 22 times (including 2 x Smiths) and that was, by far, the WEIRDEST I've ever seen him.

A few things; the crowd were not "crap". On the Royal Circle, most of the right hand side were standing and there were some nutters leaping about on the left and at the front of the aisles.

The sound was not "crap". It wasn't great, but not a disaster and his voice sounded amazing, and Pigsty in particular showed how good the band could sound.

So - what the hell was his excuse?

It really was like watching somebody lose the plot. When he swore - "what the fuck do you have to do to be played on the radio these days?" - it wasn't a witty aside but a genuine moment of frustration where he let his mask slip. He was never the same after that.

Then, he seemed to turn on his own material. He kept saying "why are you clapping?" and "was that horrible?". It's almost as if he realises that a setlist with all this new stuff in is getting boring, even for him.

The last few songs he was just going through the motions and looked physically ill.

On the way out, I heard a guy moan "I can't believe it, 7 solo albums [I know he was wrong, it's 8], all that Smiths stuff and he plays THAT". I think this is the crux of the problem. People who pay £30 odd a ticket want to hear some hits so there are two ways round this; less new stuff, or play all new stuff but make gig a good half hour longer. I got the feeling even if he'd done a couple of things like Suedehead or Sunday, the crowd would have gone bananas.

Lastly, talking to that American guy in the front row was just humiliating his audience. That was horrible and another part of the live self-deprecation we witnessed.

So, basically Morrissey screwed up at the Palladium. If the sound WAS crap, he shouldn't have taken it out on the audience by denying them an encore. Same goes for his moodiness about Virgin Radio - don't take it out on the people who've paid £32 to hear you play.

I've been seeing the man ever since the kill uncle tour and by far this was the worst show!
First the crowd - i guess this is what you get when you shove your true fans up in the Royal/Upper circle and get all the so called vip's down in the stalls - i woke up in 6am when the tickets went on sale, went to Stargreen and for some bizzare reason althoguh i was the first in line i still got tickets to the Royal circle and on the 6th row!
Second the setlist - how can he not do any song from either Viva Hate or Vaxhall?? and please we want some more Smiths songs!!! yes i know he's sick of it and longing to be past that awful years but still you have to admit 'Still ill' was the highlight of the night.
And finally no encore...bloody hell for £35 it would have been nice just to come back even for saying thanks - the reason the man is still playing is for his fans!

After the gig one of the senior staff members said to a few of us outside the Palladium that Morrissey didn't do an encore because of the "technical problems" they were having. He continued something along the lines of "Morrissey couldn't hear the music properly - but don't quote me on that - I like having a job".

I saw the set list on sound mixing desk, and it definitely had "PADDY" slotted in for the encore. I certainly noticed that the sound worsened towards the end of the concert. The drums and bass seemed way too loud, and the vocals too low.

Any suggestion that his pathetic behaviour at the end was as a result of a poor crowd is nonsense.
I've seen 5 dates on the tour so far and actually I think this was the biggest hardcore attendance at any gig. I feared the Palladium would be too much a theatre venue but the atmosphere was good. The crowd only arrived 10 minutes before the start, but what do you expect on a Sunday night in Central London. His arrival was greeted with more warmth and longer applause than any of recent shows I've been to.
He is becoming obsessed with the sound. Streets was pretty ropey in parts but nothing too bad. He looked to me like he was spoiling for a fight. Picking on that poor guy in the audience with his stupid questionning and complaining when the band cut in on him slightly before the end of him speaking saying "It is only ME".
He moaned endlessly about the sound to the point where you just wanted him to get on with it. The band went off clearly expecting to be back for an encore, but oh no.

Regardless of any sound problem surely they could have got through 4 minutes of Irish Blood. It would have capped a good gig, despite his best efforts to piss people off.

One other thing - I predict he will fall ill in the very near future and cancel several shows. He will then come back with a very altered set list. This current set is just not good enough. Ganglord destroyed the atmosphere tonight. At Last I am Born is just crap really. When you think he could come up with an entire set of 'Trouble Loves Me' type perfection it makes no sense to plod on with this mediocre offering.

I have to say the sound was not great last night. In fact, in comparison to Salford (the other seated gig I've been to so far) it was terrible. You have killed me was a total mess sound-wise which got things off to a bad start. Some songs sounded better than others, but generally were poor.

Morrissey was clearly unhappy. There was also a lot of shouting from the crowd which I don't think helped his mood. In terms of lack of enthusiasm from the crowd, I think that if you choose to play all seated venues, than that's generally going to mute the crowd somewhat, so it's difficult to complain about lack of audience participation (if that's what he was doing).

Does anyone know if the American guy shouted anything which led him to be picked on? That seemed very odd.

All the comments about bad crowds at the shows. Forget them, come to America!

Moz I love you...over 40 concerts and a ton of cash to do this....why are you turning into a arsehole? Words i thought i'd never type.It seems now you just think you have to turn up...Most bands do 2-4 songs encore.We always get one.We are used to this...but NONE.We could tell you were in a mood last night but all you have to do is respect the people for just over an hour, who still turn out for you everywhere you go.

I wish he wouldn't bother with encores anyway. They're so contrived and planned and predictable. Why not just do the extra songs in the main set? I dunno but to me going off, everyone clapping then surprise surprise the artist is back! just seems really false. It's ashowbiz tradition ok but I never really got the concept of it, well apart from when bands haven't planned to come back on but the Audience insist and they then have to work out which song to play. ok we didn't get one last night & I was disapointed that we were shortchanged by 1 songs but the rest of it to me was still amazing.

I wonder why everybody is blaming the sound
for m.'s obvious unhappiness (which was pretty good to my fairly trained ears up in the royal circle).
To me it was VERY obvious that his voice
got worse during the show, a problem which peaked
in OTSIR (where he has to sing unusually high for quite a while, especially all the final chorus - thats why he had to skip that this bit).

I don't know how he wants to finish the tour with that voice. I heard him two weeks ago at A.P. and he was in fantastic shape, voice-wise, then, so he appears to be in serious trouble. Since he is such a vain and self-critic guy it def. ruined his mood.
Anyway, No Irish Blood for us yesterday, however this might have saved the other gigs yet to come.

I just hope he sorts himself out for next week!

Just to point out, Tiger Army were not there tonight and that the rest of the Morrissey tour dates have been taken off their office website (www.tigerarmy.com). I really like Tiger Army so was really dissapointed last night. It doesn't look like they will be playing Reading on Wednesday either damnit.

But onto Morrissey, no matter what anyone says on this board it was down to technical problems and the lacklustre crowd at the front (non fans?). He had technical problems for at least half an hour and its no wonder he did not want to do an encore. As for picking on the American Man?? thats bollocks, he clearly just wanted some sort of fan interaction and he didnt make the man look stupid, he probably made his night!

Are people really saying that if you dont play one encore song then the night is ruined? would you have been happier if he played a shit sounding encore, does that make you £40 ticket worth it?

All in all, a great night, just felt sorry for the man who blatently needed a bit of support which the crowd (mainly stalls) didnt give him.

Am I the only person who thought last night was really amazing? This was the third Morrissey gig I've been to on this tour (after Alexandra Palace and Grimsby) and I thought it was far better than both of them put together.

Where I was in the Upper Circle, the atmosphere was amazing and crowd were obviously having a great time, with loads of people dancing and singing along. The sound was a lot better than at most of the Morrissey gigs I've been to.

He was quite funny and talkative, held lots of peoples hands, gave the microphone to the American guy in the front row, and took an envelope (I think, I couldn't see properly) from someone else. The rest of the band were on top form as well. I felt really sorry for all of them though, especially with everyone booing so much at the end. Despite the crowd seemingly enjoying themselves a lot, no one really responded to the rest of the band except when Boz took over during Morrissey's shirt change, no one even seemed to make an effort during Jesse's guitar solo when he was at the front of the stage with Morrissey (can't remember exactly which song it was now). Boz's dancing was a highlight as well.

That shite last night cost me £2 a minute. If entertaining your fans is such a chore, then give it up. Don't take the piss (and my money)

...and at least your man turned. How Soon Is Now? A smashing second song choice of course, and the band on fine form - great multi-instrumentalist on the keyboards/trumpet/trombone/stupidly big drum there!

We did think Morrissey had a wee bit of ear/hearing trouble at some points as he definitely had a finger in an ear, and at one point in both for a short amount of time.

Loved the ‘Ken Dodd stood here’ comment though.

I was awestruck after the Preston YATQ gig in 2004, the first time I saw Morrissey, after which I was immediately committed for life. Last night’s short show (it WAS short!) in a less than ideal venue where we half-expected him to come on in dinner suit with a string section in tow, not to mention its non-moshing stalls and then that now legendary impromptu ending (it can’t be right that you have to stand there like a dolt until you see the crew taking the gear off stage, only at which point are you sure it’s over) just wasn’t the same. Obviously. It *was* nice to get out though ;)

look at other singers/bands from his era. The Beautiful South enjoyed huge chart success in the 1990s. Several million-selling albums and singles which were all over radio and glued to the top 10. Now, virtually no-one plays their songs on the radio (R2 put new single on C-list) and their new single entered the chart at 41, even lower than Graham Coxon’s horrible, mockney-cockney new song.

Moz gets A-listed by Radio 2, top 5 single, number 1 album, sell out tour.

Sorry, but I have to say I totally agree with the negative comments. Last night was an absolute disgrace - and, in the past 18 years of seeing Morrissey solo, I have never, ever a) heard him booed and b) joined in with that booing. But I did last night: I booed and vowed never again to waste my money on a man so clearly out of love with his own audience.

The sound quality was FANTASTIC all night - so there's no excuse there (I do understand that the stage monitors MAY have been off - but whatever happened to the show must go on?). But the setlist was diabolical and his stagecraft was hesitant and self-conscious. For a man so (rightly) proud of his solo career, why play NOTHING from his four best albums while playing several Smiths songs? It makes no sense whatsoever. So we got no November, no Hairdresser, no Suedehead, no Playboys, no The More You Ignore Me, no Jack The Ripper, no Sunday, no Alma Matters - nothing which would have put the new album in context. And why exactly did he dedicate a song to the late Floyd Patterson... and not makes that song Boxers?

I've got nothing against the new album (well, except for the fact it's cold, emotionless and poorly produced - but the critics have been nicely paid off this time around, haven't they?) - play the new songs, feel free. I spent £300 on ebay buying tickets last and of course am disappointed. I've been following the man since uni when the Smiths played in my student bar-25p for a ticket, way before anything had been released.

I'm in the stalls and the meathead security guy would not let me thru to the front. A load of record company knobs and corporate liggers occupied the first 2 rows and consequently no atmos there at all. i tried to throw a couple of kids over the front but to no avail.. there was absolutely no intervention with the crowd from Moz and it seemed a bit half hearted.

What will happen with the remaining Palladium shows, on H&S grounds they're not gonna let people down the front. I remember seeing the Smiths in Derby, I had been run down by a double decker and was on crutches- the gig was taped for the old grey whistle and you can see me push thru the crowds, hop on stage and wave my crutches around for the rest of the gig frantically at the side- the good old days.

Last nite you could.ve been in a wheelchair and the knuckleheads would've fucked you.

It is just plain stupid to blame the crowd. Whats all this non fans nonsense? I was down the front and it was the most animated it has been this tour. This is always going to be difficult in all seated venue.

The sound was fine ,if not a bit quiet, and I was in the second row.

Highlights were 'Ganglord', 'Pigsty' and an awsome redendition of 'Trouble Loves Me'.

What annoyed Moz was that he forgot his own words. He kept filling with 'blah blah blah'. You could see Boz smirking at the rest of the band. 'At last I am Bored' was shocking. Our man kept blaming the sound when he should have looked closer to home.

Whats really disappointing, but not surprising, is how easily he threw the towel in. If he believes his fans have been short changed then why not make it up them with a triumphant encore. Floyd Patterson would have stood his ground and fought on.

If this had been my only gig of this tour I would feel really cheated. But as we know this is the price that occassionally we have to pay.

Bring on Wednesday. Arsenal in the Champions League Final and Morrissey at the Hexagon. Come on you Reds.
