in a couple of weeks, i get to go to Law Journal prom.

naturally, i'm dateless.

yes, i know that last year, Robo in his moment of selfless grandeur said, "i can only be your friend...for example, if you don't have a date to the journal banquet next year, i'll go with you," but given the state of things, and the fact that I prefer to save face at this point, I'd prefer going with somebody else.

So, I asked pupek.

And why not? If he sees me anywhere on campus, he approaches. We have good conversations. He'll hang out with me for an hour or more before Secured Transactions.

I worked up my nerve for well over a couple of weeks. I convinced myself that he was harboring at least some small amount of interest, and that, yes, it was a big jump going from courtyard buddies to being a date to a semi-formal affair, but nobody else that I mentioned this to seemed to think it was that big of a deal.

Tired of being alone on most nights of the week, i felt like it was crazy that I was living like this. After all, my crazy aunt had apparently found at least two men to have affairs with during her marriage to my uncle. I shouldn't have to be relegated to some guy who's definition of a relationship is not returning your phone calls after you spent the night together and then acting outraged and perplexed that you've given up on him.

On Monday, pupek was fixated on some landlord issues. Given the situation, I didn't feel up to changing the subject.

Today, I was sitting on the patio and trying to read for class. He came up with his Subway salad and plopped himself down. After discussing more landlord issues, there was a sufficient enough pause in the conversation to where I braced myself and tried to make it sound casual. He appeared stunned....and then stammered that he had to think about it, and that he might be moving out of his apartment that weekend.

Things were pleasant after that point as I made sure not to act like it was any big deal. He then asked me to come into the library to look at the property code for his landlord issue, and then he split.

Great.

So, I guess this means he doesn't want to go, but is too chicken to have thought of a better excuse. That sucks for me because what if he only says "yes" out of pity or obligation? What if he drags his feet so long that I'm waiting and can't find anybody else to go, and (once again) have to go by myself?

At the same time, if I withdraw the invitation too quickly, it makes me look like a flake and someone who was looking for a platonic date, which may then kill off any sort of "hmm. maybe i do think of her like that" which might burgeon.

But I just don't understand it. In my mind, he acts somewhat interested. If it's the Robo issue, it sure hasn't kept him from hanging around me. Granted, he's never asked for my phone number or what I was doing over the weekend or anything, but I don't know what pace this guy works at.

Dear Lord...

it was about the worst scenario one can hope for. At the moment, i seriously wish that I could simply not attend and be done with it. After all, my friend S is having her bridal shower earlier that same afternoon. It's absolutely plausible for me to bug out on it for that reason....but I feel obliged since I'm a member of THE BOARD to make a perfunctory appearance.

That's even better.

"Hi! I'm a member of the board. As you may have all noticed, I'm the only one up here who is not in any sort of steady relationship or married. As a matter of fact, I couldn't find a male to be my date for this lame event, which is the story of my life."

Guys don't normally like attending things like that unless they're getting an award or are going for a specific purpose, like networking. And guys who are already stressed out REALLY don't want to attend that sort of thing, even if they like you.

If you really feel like you need to go and you need to take a date, find some hypersocial guy who just likes a night out and will do it for the fun of it. A gay guy is best. They're great at these things because they tend to have an eye for potential wardrobe malfunctions, so it makes the evening more exciting. Just make sure he isn't going to flake on you at the last minute if some dude calls and invites him out.
