  • Janice's band introduction did not include either Alain or Jesse. This could have some interesting ramifications for the lucky souls going to Earls Court or Dublin.

Perhaps it's a curtain raiser for Alain's return? More likely, it's nothing.

    Cheers,

    Jamie

  • how nice to come running in the front door after freezing in the cold waiting for the bus that was running late and finding i hadn't missed a moment.

it appears janice is a big fan of the priest look as well!

there were about 5 fewer audience questions than i supposed would happen....

couldn't make out much of Easy To get and was straining my ears to figure out what it was at first.

Redondo beach in a higher voice than i thought he would do...almost sounded like a cheap 70's porn at the beginning...not that i know from personal experience in watching, but it's what i've been told by others.....

    Noise is er...noise. i guess.

and how else to end the christmas season than with a send off to Mike Joyce?

practiced at not giving a straight answer, we didn't get much except for his want to turn the tables and interview janice instead. they were supposedly pressed for time.

It was obvious that the interview segment was quite rushed. Ironically, in the session two years ago when Moz was without a label he seemed a lot happier whereas now he seemed very guarded about his success. Maybe I'm reading in too much. He also woulnd't quash those retirement rumours, which is sad...

Musically, I was surprised how MOR "I'm Playing Easy to Get" is. I was expecting something better than the other recent b-sides, but for me it didn't come close to my top 2 or 3 Quarry B's. "Noise is the Best Revenge" was a lot better, I thought. A real glam guitar monster. Moz' vocal was more buried in the mix (Your Arsenal style). Jesse's guitar work was excellent! Is this a Whyte/Morrissey track? Conversely, I didn't like Jesse's take on "It's Hard to Walk Tall..." I really like the studio version of that b-side. Morrissey's vocals didn't seem very impassioned either, and he skimped on the falsetto at the end. He did hit some high notes, however, on the cover of "Redondo Beach". Great lyrics, but beyond the pleasing reggae lilt, musically there isn't much there, or am I missing something?

Overall a decent session, felt like a "quickie". But I'm still very appreciative there *is* a session to review!

And Janice -- we know how much you like Alain -- you could've asked after him, or were you told that question was out of bounds?

  • Creative decline? (Score:1, Insightful)

This may be premature, but to be honest, the two new songs were nothing special at all. Since Morrissey told MOJO that he still thinks Quarry is a "great album" (and yes, this is probably what you'd expect), what prospects for next year's album? I'm sorry, but I don't think Quarry is that good, and if the 2005 album is just YATQ part II, with no development or improvement, then that will be vastly disappointing. I don't think these songs show any marked creative upswing. The best YATQ song is still the undoubtedly excellent 'First Of The Gang To Die' and the best b-side is probably 'No One Can Hold A Candle To You' (not even his own) or 'The Never Played Symphonies'. I also like 'The Public Image'.

What I'd like to see M. do now (not saying he has to, it's just my dream!) is to make an acoustic album, featuring acoustic guitar and piano as the predominant instrument - but no strings, just stark, soulful melodies. Stuff like 'Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself?' or 'Trouble Loves Me'. The torch singer in Moz would be vastly suited to this, and as yet it hasn't been done, at least not over a whole record. Imagine him singing his dark, witty poetry over a beautiful piano melody a la Randy Newman live (with JUST piano and nothing else) or a biting acoustic piece, played by Boz or whoever. And then drop the Finn production, make the production less polished and more stark. No more glam numbers, there's enough of them in his catalogue now - yeah, 'Walk Tall' is great fun, but we've heard it all before. 'Your Arsenal' did that brilliantly and it doesn't need repeating. I think 'Daddy's Voice', for instance, is just a disposable piece of glam without a really good tune. Point is, the new songs on J Long just sound bog standard, and if the new album's full of stuff like that ('Easy To Get' ANOTHER MOR ballad, after Quarry was stacked full of them and 'Noise' ANOTHER glam adventure) then it's just not going to be interesting. Really, Moz needs a new direction. Nothing earthshakingly radical, like turning into Kratftwerk, but something that enables him to explore suitable new avenues and retain his freshness and edge. I don't look for any more 'Glamorous Glue' type songs from him now - 'Glam Glue' is great, but those days are gone. Lyrically, he should stay as he is, perhaps sharpen them up a bit - but he'd be the only artist to say the things he's saying in the context of a stark, acoustic album. I really think it would revolutionize his music, making it soulful, truthful but above all new and fresh.

And if this sounds prescriptive, it's not meant to, it's just a dream I have of what he could do as he ages - the 'alternative Sinatra', whatever. Acoustic music is also timeless - hear a Billie Holiday song like 'Strange Fruit', and though it's 60 years old, because it's just her voice and piano, it lasts. Like Dylan's early acoustic songs - could've been recorded yesterday. I certainly don't oppose more upbeat pop numbers like 'Gang' but I'm not sure how long he can go on repeating that formula.

    Apologies for the rant!

Well, here we come to the heart of the matter: Morrissey doesn't have the co-writers right now to make this kind of music.

Alain and Boz may not be completely without talent, but they lack the brilliance to really craft masterful songs. Just listen to the majority of the B-sides. Don't forget: they had seven years to write those songs!

Morrissey should find someone new to write songs with. That's all that matters for the future.

  • "I'm Playing Easy To Get" sounds just like every other b-side. While I like the b-sides very much the music and Moz's tone of voice are too similar. I'm sorry to say the guys are letting Moz down. Moz's lyrics are also a bit too similar i.e. easy listening.

"Redondo Beach" was a bit too simplistic. Didn't really like the lyric changes either (even though they were minimal). It obviously couldn't be better than the original but it's not even a very good cover. However it was the best song they played.

"Noise Is The Best Revenge" was just a bit underwhelming musically and lyrically. Shame about that.

"It's Hard To Walk Tall" sounded quite good if a bit clunky and slow. It should be much more fast and loud.

Still, at least the interview showed how Moz is still a genius under all the GOOD music.

    - on tv appearances: acknowledged there were "odd places" (T4 by any chance?) but it's a duty , something you have to do.. (more please)

    - on acting: "how can I act when I can't even be normal?"

Why did she ask him whether he would ever appear in a commercial? It's a bit of a waste of 30 seconds, if you ask me - he's not likely to promote any product ever..he doesn't even endorse charity records - She knew what he would say, we knew what he would say. In fact, I pretty much could have predicted every reaction and reply to her statements/questions; it felt a bit "reheated", if you get my drift.

My own question to you guys: can anyone shed some light on who Damian Dempsey is? or what he does? I must have skipped an episode! Thanks!

I’m just playing easy to get
Don’t dig for a secondary meaning
At worse you might just find a first
And don’t wonder why I’m standing over here
I’m just playing easy to get
Do I have to drop anchor like a sailor
To switch on the bulb in your head?
Do not frisk me, silence is your answer
I’m just playing easy to get

    I’m so easy
    Maybe you’ve had me
If you had then you would not forget
When you see me between Cole and Cahuenga
    I’m just plain desperate

So don’t waste time trying to get to know me
    I’m yours
    I’m yours
And don’t waste time with snappy conversation
    I’m yours
    Everyone knows
    I’m yours

      Redondo Beach

    Let it be known
    Dreaming hotel
    We just had a quarrel
    I sent you away
    I was looking for you
    are you’re gone, gone
    Called you on the phone
    But there was no answer
    Will you never return?
    Will you never want me?
    I was looking for you
    Are you’re gone, gone?

    Down by the ocean
    It was so dismal
    Women all standing
    With shock on their faces
    Sad description
Oh, I was looking for you

    Everyone was singing
    Girl is washed up
    On Redondo Beach
    And everyone is so sad
    I was looking for you
    Are you’re gone, gone?
    Hey little girl
    Everyone cried
How she was the victim of suicide
    I was looking for you
    Are you’re gone, gone?

    Down by the ocean
    It was so dismal
    Women all standing
    With shock on their faces
    Sad description
Oh, I was looking for you

    Desk clerk told me
    A girl is washed up
    Was small, an angel
    With apple blond hair now
    I was looking for you
    are you’re gone, gone?

    Picked up my key
    And I didn’t reply
I just went into my room
    And I started to cry
    It was morning angel
    Are you’re gone, gone?

    Down by the ocean
    It was so dismal
    I was just standing
With shock on my face though
    The hearse pulled away
The girl that had died it was you

    You’ll never return
    Into my arms
    You’ll never return
    Into my arms
    You’ll never return
    Into my arms
    Cause you’re gone, gone
    Gone, gone
    Gone, gone
    Oh good bye.
